can we please knock off this Fitzmas nonsense? . . .
first, it trivializes a very critical issue, including what could very well be the most important criminal case in US history . . . we know that the Repugs will try to trivialize the indictments, and now they can point to Fitzmas as an indication that even we Democrats don't take it all that seriously . . .

and second, Fitzmas implies that we'll somehow be receiving a gift, when in fact what we'll be receiving is justice . . . and justice is always a right, never a gift . . .

it's fine to have fun at the expense of the right wing, but this is NOT an issue to make light of in any way . . . doing so just gives BushCo defenders ammunition to diminish the importance of what is about to happen . . .

10. I don't agree with everything that is posted on DU.
However, I think it's pretty presumptuous to make suggestions about what people can and cannot post when their posts are within the bounds of DU rules. If you don't like it, don't click on the thread.

Some people are seeing these potential indictments as hope - hope that has been missing for a long, long time. If they want to cherish the moment and enjoy it, who am I...or you, for that matter...to deny them?

Each of us deals with the stress of the situation differently. I highly respect your opinion. It is certainly a valid one. But some of us deal with things a bit differently.

I'm very sorry that the celebrating bothers you. But I hope you realize that it's a way of blowing off some steam for some of us. I guess what I'm saying is that if you don't like Fitzmas stuff, that you try to avoid it. I know it's tough because it's all over the place.

OK...I realize a lot of people do not celebrate Xmas....but to a number of us in this country, Xmas carries some very fond memories. Nevermind that Xmas represents the birth of Jesus....one cool radical Leftie...! December 25 is a day of great memories...a day of giving and receiving of wonderful gifts...

We are honoring Patrick Fitzgerald....don't you see that? He is a man of honor...a man of integrity.

If our joy and hope are too much for your defeatism...go read something else, OK?

154. What is wrong with you?
I stated an opinion. I most often do read other things then the gaggles of posts entitled: "I have my Fitzmas sweater on", "It's beginning to look alot like Fitzmas", etc ad naseum.

This thread is by a poster who thinks it's silly. Well, I do too. Id suggest you maybe go read something else, given that the thread title clearly deliniates that this is the topic.

I think it's silly like lifesized theatric puppets at antiwar protests when 10s of thousands of people are dead. Puppets just dont do it justice to me. Bah humbug.

I guess Im a real downer. I just believe certain events ask of us and deserve reverence. If I get to tell my children about the fall of a regime right here in our own country, I wont be doing it with glee. These are dark days in the history of our country. Im ashamed that we have pinned our hopes on one man. Im ashamed that we didnt do something sooner. Im ashamed that we set up an environment of government with our votes that allowed this travesty to happen. Im ashamed that I type as people die and our country will never be the same.

These indictments aren't the end game.. so excuse me if I save my giddy glee for when the fight is over because this is just the beginning.

157. Yes, I realize that this is the just the beginning....
of retrieving our Democracy. But I believe there is a saying about the First Step is the most difficult. So what if some people want to express some 'silly glee' regarding the First Step.

You have lots of shame....I don't. I am fucking angry...and many of us have been DOING something to stop these fascists. I've been fighting since 1980 when Reagan started all of this. And I was fighting when Nixon tried to cover up his crimes.

As far as pinning our hopes on one person....one person is capable of causing GREAT CHANGE!

Go cry on someone else's parade.

151. While true,
Bush* gives his staffers cutesey names. "Scooter" would be one.

They hate being made fun of. At all. Period.

So, we poke fun. We refuse to take seriously that which we know, beyond any doubt, is serious, because we know if we refused to laugh and poke fun at all, very soon we would have nothing to laugh about, period.

So, laugh it up. I can guarantee you the seriousness of the case to Fitzgerald and the Grand Jury remains printinely untouched. I don't think they care if we're calling it "Fitzmas", and it's those findings that matter- not what people think of us.

and can understand it.. Laughing is good for the soul.. different people deal with grief, anger, etc in different ways.

Right now is a time of quiet focus and meditation for me as I play through the possible scenarios and outcomes of this. I dont see all of the possibilities as gleeful...

So I wait, in suspended animation, to prepare myself for what is next.

Alot of people seem so caviler about this.. as if indictments are handed down we have "won". But I just dont see it that simple. Maybe through the last 6 years I have allowed pessimism to become my first inclination. But I just dont think it is as simple as this.. some domino effect that will require nothing more from us. I dont think enough has been required of us to preserve our country. This is when we hunker down and use the opportunity to get real ideas of change and hope out...not waste it with premature celebration, or subjugation by "cuteness".

174. you're right, of course
But "a lot of people" are just not very well informed on a wide range of topics. I, too, take this all very seriously. I've been fighting for a more just society when I was a little girl in the 1950s and I've been in the streets protesting Bush since he took office. I've been part of a peace group working to stop this war since before it started. And, yes, I'm pretty well exhausted by this administration.

But one of the things I've learned in all that time is that lots and lots of people (the vast majority, in fact) will never take the world as seriously as I do. And unless I can get them to see something inspiring or entertaining in what I am offering to them, they will turn their backs and go on to something else.

So, maybe I won't be the one with the huge puppets at the antiwar marches, but I won't discourage them if they bring out people who otherwise would be at home shrugging off the whole thing. Likewise, if Fitzmas makes the MSM pay any extra attention to this and causes 2 or 3 other people to listen for a minute, just to find out what that is all about, I have no regrets.

After so many years, I've learned that just because I take the world very, very seriously, I really can't expect that of everyone. And when I start to think I can, everyone else is likely to leave me alone to do all the work of serious change.

John Lennon

So this is Fitzmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Fitzmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Fitzmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Fitzmas
For weak and for strong
For rich and the poor ones
The world is so wrong
And so happy Fitzmas
For black and for white
For yellow and red ones
Let's stop all the fight

A very Merry Fitzmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear

And so this is Fitzmas
And what have we done
Another year over
A new one just begun
And so happy Fitzmas
We hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

A very Merry Fitzmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one

19. oh sure- rain on our parade- can't we try to gleen as much fun as possible
from the horror that is the BushCrime family?

"Fitzmas" doesn't trivialize anything, IMHO. I think it describes the weight and importance of the situation- while caputuring the pre-indictment excitment that we all feel at the possiblity of justice finally being served.

If (when) they all wind up in court- beer and pizza at my house! Party every night of the trial! For the bull*hit we have put up with we deserve it!

60. Justice served?
Maybe...just maybe a few members of the Bush Administration will face criminal charges which will in the worst case scenario (from their perspective) result in them spending some time in a low security country club prison working on their tennis game.

Justice will be served when the 45 million Americans who are currently without health insurance get coverage, when the 1 in 6 children who live in poverty are given tangible assistance, and when the schools in East St. Louis are funded just as well as the ones in Westchester County.

These indictments might be a field goal in the little football game between the D's and R's in the beltway, but will have minimal effect in the total political landscape across the whole nation. It may be Watergate version 2.0, but where did Watergate get us? What great progressive policy agenda was implemented in the aftermath of Watergate? Shit. A decade after Watergate our nation was being sodomized by the second-worst president in our history.

You can accuse me of being negative, but what I'm proposing is a much more optimistic vision than the CSPAN-Junkie Schadenfreude that lies behind the "Fitzmas" mentality. I truly believe that if we continue the fight, our fellow citizens will eventually reject the morally bankrupt conservative ideology which is destroying our nation. This doesn't mean they get fed up with corruption, throw the bums out, then several years later elect people even worse. Rather it means making a permanent change.

We need to set the bar higher.

92. After all that this mafia has managed to get away with,
we really need this field goal. We all know what the greater goals are, but many of us are elated that things have changed enough that even the media is being a tad more even-handed, and that people are waking up.

I don't really agree that this will have a minimal effect, either. It seems that the wheels have come off, and that Bush will never gain back the credibility he's lost. "Fitzmas," as we're calling it, advances that demythification of Bush and his gang, so it's a good thing.

Fitzgerald himself, like an honest man and a good public servant, is indifferent to our songs and glee. But the glee is earned. The lies seemed to be unending, the damage so extensive. WE ARE HAPPY IF THEY ARE BEING UNCOVERED FOR WHAT THEY ARE.

And most of us can, at the same time, ponder the serious issues.

107. But this is much bigger than the Bush Administration.
Unless we see changes in the ideology of the United States, Bush and the gang will just be replaced by another set of right-wingers.

Anyway, they were uncovered for what they were years ago. Anybody who doesn't already recognize that they are a bunch of crooks is willfully ignoring such a huge fact base that the indictments won't make a bit of difference:

Fitzgerald is a mean-spirited partisan trying to smear the honorable names of members of the Bush Administration. Only the Democrats would stoop so low as to push these fraudulent indictments. They should be ashamed.

Is this true? Of course not. But it's not any less true than all the other bullshit these extremists hav been blathering about for the last 5 years.

77. an English teacher's thoughts on Fitzmas
"Fitzmas" is actually very appropriate and this comes from an English teacher who eschews wordplay unless it's her own (just kidding).

As a combination of Fitzpatrick and Christmas, it comes at a most appropriate time. Fitzpatrick is, many hope, a possible savior of our beloved democracy. If he can bring these traitors down, there may be a chance for our country, something I'd pretty much crossed off the list some time ago.

Fitzpatrick is only doing his part but in a corrupt America, he appears to be doing it without the usual tricks (no leaks, for example). He appears to be corruption-free. That's something we rarely encounter.

Christmas is a season where we have to wait for our gifts. In this part of the wordplay, waiting for indictments is very much like waiting for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

God knows we here at DU have waited and waited. Our hopes have been dashed most cruelly by this cabal--most notably in the '02 midterm elections and in the presidential election of '04. We know they stole these elections and it is most painful for us to have to watch that.

When I first heard "Fitzmas," I didn't like it because it seemed to put an inordinate and almost naive amount of faith in one man, Fitzpatrick. But having looked at his background, it appears he is someone with whom we can have faith.

Fitzmas, therefore, is a word that sums up the situation quite nicely.

Cher

p.s. I also like Fitzgiving.

34. So who should be the three spirits?
Obviously Richard Nixon would have to be the Ghost of Impeachments Past.

What about the others?

Salem Bin Laden (the financial backer of Chimpy's first failed business) could play the Jacob Marley role.

Sydnie,

If that warm breeze off the meadow had not played with Sydnie's
hair as she sat on the porch of the Summer house @ Gull Bay there
would have been no ......

Christmas @ Gull Bay

The smell of the turkey dinner with all the fixings wafted through
the Crimson River Tavern. Some EDVs were speaking in Yiddish
about the good news from Washington D.C. that had climaxed
w/ George W Bush being removed form the White House.

Rove, Frist, DeLay, Rush, Brownie, Rummy, Cheney, Rice and
Wolfowitz all were in jail. A massive investigation had reveled
not only a stolen election but a rush to war which was done
in large part to allow massive profits for friends of the now
disgraced ex President.

A gentle snow blanketed the ground outside and a fresh cut fir tree
stood by the fireplace and was being trimmed by Crispini
with her extra toys.

The Bay Air family had decided to winter in one of the bedrooms
rather then the cave so the cubs were sleeping in front of the fire
along with a freshly tranq. darted KO.

Newly appointed President Al Gore was scheduled to speak to the
nation at nine PM.

Happy Holidays.

Which in turn produced Dem Carols, that became "Fitzmas Carols",
and so on.

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

132. Totally agree
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 06:56 AM by karynnj
Our country and government has been gravely misused by this administration. There is nothing funny about it. I agree that the sight of people gleefully treating this as a happy time could make something that should turn people against Bush into something where they hate BOTH sides. I agree it is fun and made me laugh - but the internet is not private.

Whether there even are indictments, the important thing is to establish how outside standard American government the Bush administration took us in he runup to war. What the level needs to do is both turn DOWN the noise and turn up the SIGNAL (message).

By noise I mean all the internecine warfare where it sometimes seems that John Kerry (who was among the first to speak against going to war) and Hillary seem to be blamed for the war more than Bush himself. From what is known at this point, neither were in on the Bush plan.

By message, I mean a clear message that Bush and his cabal eliminated all the checks and balances and started a democracy crusade (a word I am intentionally using) which he could not have honestly sold to the country. (I also won't be surprised if democracy crusade becomes oil crusade.)

153. I'm sorry, I think you're way way way off the mark here.
"I agree it is fun and made me laugh - but the internet is not private."

And we know this. The difference is, by saying we need to temper ourselves when we poke fun, you're handing the 'them' in all this the first victory they need: willingness to remain silent.

They want you to be afraid to poke fun. They want you to think laughing at them makes you look foolish. This is because they know, when people laugh at them, it means people "get it".

THAT is why we're all calling it Fitzmas, Fitzgiving, St. FitzPatrick's day, etc. We do it because we know it gets under their skin and stays there like an annoyingly small metal splinter. They can't pull it because it's in too deep. It irritates and distracts them.

We know what the truth of the matter is, which is why we're able to so effectively poke fun. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see TDS or the Colber(t) Repor(t) wish us all a "Merry Fitzmas" if (and, hopefully, when) indictments are returned. It really wouldn't surprise me to see them run with it, way over the top, Santa outfits and all.

It evokes the feelings of joy and relief at the end of this long, long wait for justice. It seems to me a very clever way to gloat, by association to a joy that is entirely free of nastiness or bitter partisanship. Who will quarrel with the joys of Fitzmas?

(and as a little bonus, there is a very subtle subtext that Dems are NOT evil and anti-Christmas.)

147. on reflection....
I know even more why I like it. It reminds me of the "Morning in America" ads that were so popular for Reagan. If the public has any reservations about Democrats, they are likely related to the stereotypes put out by Repubs, that Dems are angry and hostile and bitter and crazed to get rid of Bush.

By contrast, "Fitzmas" evokes joy at a long-awaited day, a time when justice finally begins to happen, the dark cloud starts to lift, and there is joy at the possibility of better, brighter days to come. Much more than anger, this is exactly the kind of spirit we want associated with Dems as we go into the next elections.

159. I agree
There is no real joy in this. This is a sad day for us.
We are in a situation where there are many people who find themselves in a position where they have needed their president to be there to make good decisions for them. Not withstanding any wrongdoing, responses to Katrina, budget, 9/11, Iraq, etc called for good decisions and the citizens have not had it.
There is truly nothing more tragic than the fact that a corrupt bunch of gangsters have been lying young people to their death. This is nothing to celebrate at all.
When this comes down parents are going to have to explain it to kids. The crash of American innocence is always a sad thing for people. This is going to literally break people's hearts across the country.
It's a terrible thing for these guys to shatter that illusion for those naive folks out there who love to continue to cling to it.
Keep in mind there are going to be some parents who feel very betrayed because their kids are in Iraq over these lies.
Glee seems kind of insensitive, if not heartless.

161. Celebrating any victory over corrupt gangsters
running the government is totally appropriate I think. Considering the oppression we've been living with, joy = relief. It doesn't mean that those who celebrate don't understand the hard road ahead.

Yes it will be sad for people who put their faith in Bushco to see their hopes finally dashed. We can probably all relate to the feeling of misplaced trust. But illusions MUST be shattered if people are ever going to become wiser about which leaders they give their hearts to. America needs and deserves better leadership--you said it--people who don't lie and abuse trust.

The up side, if we can get rid of this cancer at the core of government, is that the rest of the country who didn't support this administration will be ready to begin reconstruction. There is no point in wasting much sympathy for those who were duped by some very clever operators. Too much damage has been done by the TRULY heartless.

that it's a bit of an invasion to cheerfully go around disabusing people of the reality of the "existance of Santa Claus."
American innocence and superiority are ideals that people hold dear. It is more than a single issue that comes crashing down for people. It is a belief in something they thought they could count on.
I submit that it is worthwhile to show a little respect for what may actually be a mourning process for a large part of the country. This stuff hurts people.

Suggest to post this as a separate topic, as it's highly debatable IMO. There may be some that can shed more light on it than I. What I think you are missing is that respect has to go BOTH ways. It's not always up to Liberals to do the respecting.

I agree that there will be a mourning process over the fall of the House of Boosh...and one usually 'respects' mourning phases. However it's unrealistic to ask us for that in this case. Did any of these people give a damn while Bushco was running roughshod over everything WE care about? I don't think so. Respect has to go both ways.

Your point that I DO resonate with is the degree of depression the Bush- supporting public will experience if/as the house of cards collapses. Obviously their support of him was answering a great need, however misguided. But if "American innocence and superiority" are fond ideals in the public psyche then we do need a profound shift away from that state of delusion. If suffering through the Boosh era causes this profound shift in public perspective, then it will have been worth it...

Wising up is often painful.

Everyone else is just going to have to learn to accept he truth--YES, they have been lied to, YES, they have been scammed, and YES, their votes have been cheated. How much stress and torment have we all suffered through these years, with our awareness of the immorality, corruption and incompetence of this admin? Why not celebrate the fact that B*shco will be disgraced for all the world to see, and permanently in the history books?

There is a lot of nervous excitement here.. I don't think anyone is over-confident about the results, there is a lot of nervous energy here. We have all waited so long and probably never expected this day to come.

Why not just let those who feel joy, emote in whatever manner they see fit? If it's champagne, humor or anger- go for it.... whatever. I don't think anyone is trivializing this investigation or it's outcome because we know the price we have all paid: a needless war, countless maimed and dead, neglect of America's needs, to name a few.

Well stated, OneBlueSky, and every point you made is right on target.

Although I will be happy and relieved if the indictments are handed down, those feelings will be tempered by my respect for the dignified job done by Mr. Fitzpatrick and his obvious commitment to the overwhelming importance of the rule of law.

The Republicans already are trivializing Mr. Fitzpatrick's important work. Why get down to their level? This isn't a **** football game, we're talking about thousands of lives destroyed because of this government's lack of respect for some of our most sacred principles as a people, as evidenced by this case.

Frankly, many of the responses on this thread have sounded almost Freeperish. The childish disdain for a DUer who was making a thoughtful point went way over the line.

Another voice speaking out against the personality cult that has sprung up around Patrick Fitzgerald.
