Anything at all? As seen on Olbermann's "Countdown," damage in Cancun is terrible; situation is terrible. And Mexicoxpat was on an island, not on the mainland.

Isla Mujeres from some reports suffered pretty catastrophic damage. No reports of deaths or serious injuries though. Still no power or phones.

This is a bad translation of an article from El Universal. Island Women is of course Isla Mujeres. I think we'll hear from mexicoexpat, but not for a while.

00:10 Affected population: 13,679 hab. In some popular colonies the water reached to meter and means of height. In the Colony Extension the Gloria, in the North coast, are severe damages. Some houses collapsed, informed Jose Luis Kings, for Daily Monitor.
Water: it is received through underground ductos coming from Cancún. The service is interrupted and it will not be reestablished until it recovers in the State Capital.

Foods: Some small commerce opened their doors, but the supply diminishes quickly. The local DIF distributed pantries between the settlers. The people of the popular colonies complaint from which pantries have arrived, but all has not been given.

Health: According to data of the Center of Health of the locality, it is anticipated that in the next days they bring forth the diseases by lack of potable water between the islanders.

Tourism: In the radio it is reported that the great majority of the tourists left the island from last Wednesday.

Affected schools: 14 of 14 (100%). the state authorities that will be no classes in at least a month due to the damages that the infrastructure suffered and to the lack of water.

Affected hospitals (estimation): 4 of 4 (100%).

Estimation of damages to road network: 26 of 26 km (100%)

Estimation of damages to urban road network: 50% of the total of roads

Communications: both ports are affected, ferrys does not give service and the airport was qualified as military base, but the airlift is slow. Helicopters with pantries, but material lack arrive to reconstruct houses.

Yesterday Monday, in the evening, Island Women could resume marine transit from the platform of Cancún, to receive food.

Affected hotels (estimation): 49 of 49 (100%) that adds 998 quarters.

Electrical energy: Damaged and suspended the 100% of the service. According to the CFE, the service it could delay up to 15 days in starting again itself. In agreement with wireless reports, the organization receives potable and electrical water provision thanks to an underground wiring coming from Cancún, but it is afraid that this one has been affected by the force of the water. While these services in the State Capital are not reestablished, Island Women will also continue without them.

Estimation affected economic units: 540 (80% of the total)

Public Lighting system: damaged 90%.


Urban signaling: 100% damaged.

Sport Infrastructure: 100% of the sport infrastructure with some type of damage.

Fishing: Damages to the totality of the infrastructure.

5. Wow, Richard D, thank you! I've been trying

for awhile to get info on Isla Mujueres because of MXPat, but also because we're familiar with Playa del Carmen and have been worried about the entire area.
This is a devastating report. I don't know what to say or think. :-(

A Scots holidaymaker stranded in Mexico has been describing the chaos caused by Hurricane Wilma after it battered the country.

Thousands of tourists were evacuated from their hotels as 150mph winds ripped through coastal resorts.

Neil Meldrum, from Blair Atholl, said conditions at his shelter near Cancun were terrible.

He told BBC Radio Scotland he was sheltering in a private school which had no roof.

Further on in the article, it reports 6 deaths, and thousands of homes being destroyed. I hope Mexicopat is ok. This is regarding Cancun in general, though.
