That was indeed a while ago. My nephew is also a Goth, a more recent incarnation.

The Goth girl in college was a part of the Ulster Project (I think it was called), the one where they got Catholic and Protestant kids together so that they could get to know one another. She used to say that in the club you could tell a fake Goth (someone playing dressup for kicks) from the actual Goths, because the Goths were polite while the fakes were rude because they thought that's what being Goth was about.

Her puritanical grandmother told her to dress more simply. She said "What's more simple than black?"

My nephew described the Goth movement as much an offshoot of the Romantic movement. The idea was to be poetic and dramatic. When he dressed up, he kind of reminded me of someone who'd fit in on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." His name for the fake Goths was "Gucci Goths."

my son in the early nineties went into a Goth period. I have picture of his prom, his date and friends looked like relatives from the Addams Family. They were into art, "free Tibet", and economical fun. For prom, no limousines, no fancy restaurant. They were also against wearing corporate monogrammed clothes at the time. They grew out of their phase with no ill effects. His girlfriend later, got hooked on opiates from another boyfriend and partly due to my son's breakup with her. She was going through a depression, and my son was devastated because she was on drugs. In his Goth period. he was also a SHARP and very much against drugs. To me, sometimes it's the clean cut kids you got to look at.
