So who here catches flak from their spouse/family for being
consumed with current affairs, politics, having to check DU frequently, etc.

I hear that from my spouse. Anyone else?

I for one am glad you are obsessed because I appreciate all your threads, articles and posts.

68. Same here....
My wife and I are standing up for what we believe in. Our son thinks something is wrong with us and has disowned us. We have not seen or spoken to him since July.

So be it.

You have to stand up for what you believe in. If that puts family against family, friend against friend and brother against brother then that is the way it has to be.

We need to take back our country from the men that have hijacked it out from under us. One day our friends and family will see that we have saved their asses from evil men that are not to indifferent from Saddam. If they keep pushing their policies down our throats we will live in a dictator ship.

Hang in there and keep fighting for our democracy.

18. Some colleagues and family members think I'm "fringe."
According to them "politics have nothing to do with real life!"

It's a WalMart world now. I have memories of the Nixon/Vietnam/WatergateWorld and I'm amazed at the apathy I see around me. I'm so grateful for the Internet(s).

Reminds me of Hunter S. Thompson's quote from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas concerning the "other" times:

"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda... You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.... And that, I think, was the handle --- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil."

20. Ugh! I hate that line "politics has nothing to do with real life" is that
the most asinine thing you ever heard...or at least in the top 10? I'm like when are these Americans going to get it through their thick skulls that politics affect your whole life.

The apathy is amazing (and disgusting) to me too. When is it going to be bad enough that they get off their asses and take action? If it's not now, I don't know if I want to be around for whatever it is that they think would finally warrant action.

Preaching to the choir...sorry.

26. What the...
According to them "politics have nothing to do with real life!"

Cracks me up when I hear that. I have worked with a few people in my life that have said that. Usually said by people who make noises in the back their throats when you talk about major social changes or government policy, but will usually be firing off emails and gossiping in the lunch room about who is in trouble/who is trying to get in who's pants/who has stuffed up at their own expense ect

Them: Politics have nothing to do with real life!.
Me: Really? How about office politics?
Them: well....no I dont usually get into that.
Me: -dubious tone- Uh huh.
Them: Did you hear about the guy and the girl in printing at the office party?
Me: No. I thought you didn't get into gossip and politics?
Them: Uh...politics has nothing to do with this.
Me: -laughs-

He's British and, unlike the British DUers who post here, has zero interest in American politics (or UK politics, for that matter). He says none of it affects his day-to-day life so he couldn't care less.

I recently resumed riding horses on a regular basis after taking several months off and spend a lot of time at the stable. Hubby prefers it that way because when I'm talking about horses, it means I talk less about politics.

For a smart guy, he's pretty dumb sometimes.

Mrs Penguin has occasional fits - and does not "get" why anyone would take such an interest.

Seem like everyone posting has the same issues - and also has some success in sharing their views and concerns with family members.

DU is a great release. For all of us who share a concern or worry about the morals, politics and nature of our collective future - DU is the place to come - and feel that you are not alone.

Very important to feel that there are others out there...

He thinks that politics have taken over my life (there is some truth to that- my circle of friends has certainly changed)

He only complains if for whatever reason he's been inconvenienced:can't find something in the house,or something doesn't get done that he thinks should have

My conversation lately has been 100% focused on Fitzmas - something better happen soon - I can tell this topic is wearing him down

Because I get so emotional and upset on occasion.

But he has also said that he relies on me to be his source for breaking political news since he's not allowed to visit political websites at work. He also asks my opinion about certain issues because he knows that I spend a lot of time digging up the facts and trying to understand these complex stories.

52. my "imaginary friends"
I mostly lurk but talk about DU at home frequently, and of course there's the bumper sticker on the back of my van. My family worries that I've gone off the deep end since last Nov., which I have to a degree. When I relate the content of certain threads and mention the poster, they ask if it's one of my "imaginary friends."

However, they were a bit taken aback and have quit teasing me ever since I showed the picture of my DU name on a poster at Camp Casey--AND an autographed copy of John Conyers book arrived in the mail!!!!

So, hello to all my "imaginary friends" and hang in t!! :hi:

62. My husband's republican.
My family of origin is democratic, and a 14 hour car ride away.

If it weren't for my family and DU, things at my house would be REALLY rough.

Last year was quite ugly.

63. Some flak...
My wife does not hang out at DU, but shes involved. We have not seen or spoken to our son since July. The last thing he said to me is that he thought we were both traitors and that we should move to the middle east.

George Bush did this to our family. Not Us.

67. Oh dear.
I am so very very sorry that has happened to your family! I hope that he will come to his senses. Ah, the "folly of the young" perhaps?

69. Yes BUT
I had parents. They passed down to me a country that they had nurtured and seen prosper under their diligent care. I have children. I want to present to them a world that they can thrive in, a country that they can be proud of and a future that will allow me to rest, when that final long rest comes, peacefully, knowing that I have done all within my power to be a worthy guardian of what my parents handed to me to present to their grandchildren.

So, I have to do what I have to do to be able to look myself and my children in the face everyday.

Hopefully, someday, they will feel the same responsibility that I do.
