Since the election (I'm thinking of the way they spun bush as brilliant no matter how much he sucked in debates etc...) this is VERY different.

The news media (mainstream media- CNN, morning shows) are AWARE of repug spin. They EXPECT it to follow the indictments.

I think this is a pretty incredible difference. I turned on GMA this morning and freakin' Charlie Gibson was saying how the whitehouse is ready to SMEAR FITZ as soon as indictments come out. I heard something similiar on CNN and CNN headline news. WOW. It is like the man behind the curtain is visible and I think this awareness makes their spin much less potent.

That combined with the low, low poll numbers, I think (and hope) means that they won't even spin their way out of anything today.

(edited for spelling)

1. That's the thing

I think the media is partly to blame for the war in Iraq and for the Bush Presidencies. Not because they conciously said "Lets help Bush" but because they are lazy and gullible. Well their laziness feeds their gullibility, I suppose.

Anyway I think they are starting to realize that taking the White House at face value isn't going to fly as well anymore. There are some who have really bought in, and won't change, but i think we will see some start to act more like reporters.

2. exactly.
it is a very different news climate than during 2004 even (I think katrina and Iraq were the biggest wake up calls for the media in terms of jump starting actually journalism).

A very different news climate that I don't think the Rovian spin machine has the control over that they used to and would like to!

3. The problem you see is
that you can't spin a top in muck, mud. Everyone has seen through the rubbish but hey don't believe they're going down without a fight -expect a terra alert or some real terra.

4. I think this is BS because they are still talking about the spin..
..it's just as much a cop-out as "some people say". All people who are gullible need to hear are the bits and pieces of the spin and they will run with it. As far as I'm concerned this is the medias way of getting the spin out there in a way that makes them seem like they are calling the white house on it. If they really wanted to do their job they simply wouldn't report smears or things that weren't true.

5. But they KNOW it is spin/smearing. That is different than just taking it.

7. Yeah, and the yahoos on Fox know that "some people" didn't say..
...it doesn't make it right. It's still giving it some form of airing in a forum where it should not be. When they media stops feeling compelled to give "equal time" to the other side when it is not warranted then I'll say they are doing their job.

6. The Smear: "Fitz left lasagna in his oven for 3 months
Isn't that awful? What a horrible man. Never, ever, ever listen to anything Fitz says."

Methinks the Rethug Smear Machine will sputter out for lack of fuel on this one.
