Moron vs. Moran

I am used to going on various internet posting sites and seeing "loose" for "lose"--as in loose weight instead of the correct "lose weight". Ok, I am not even a spelling freak and misspell things quite a lot and have various typos-- but different things each time--nothing consistent.

I am wondering why a number of people here (most?) feel the need to spell "moron" as "moran"? I have even seen references here where people think moran is actually the "correct" spelling. Is this some sort of DU group think? Moron is actually pretty politically incorrect verbage anyway, but I am not trying to be the 'net police here. Is moran a politically correct way to spell moron?????

Thinking I could be wrong about the correct spelling, I looked in all kinds of on line dictionaries and could never find moran. And just try using it if you play Scrabble and see what happens.

If I have lost my marbles and moran is really the correct spelling please point me to a source.

The thing is everyone is so smart here I begin to doubt myself about this............... but then again maybe it is some DU thing like using Shrub for ****.

Please enlighten me. If people are misspelling it on purpose for some sort of political correctness maybe it should be in italics or quotations or something?

Moron vs Moran is a question that is posted just about twice a month, so waiting for someone (just as you did) to ask the question is probably sufficent.

...in having a sticky or whatever that's basically a glossary of freeper-speak? maybe that would ease some of the confusion. seems like there's one or two moron/moran threads a day, probably more.

listed in Demopedia for that purpose. The admin's are not big "sticky" people unless there is a message that all should see that addresses a specific issue.

As I said, the question of correction of the spelling comes up about twice a month anyway.

At least writing "This is hugh!!!!!111" is a lot more obvious satire. Yes, I am well aware of the satirical aspect of "moran", but thousands of new users and lurkers and infrequent old users won't get it without the picture. Feel free to use it, but I really advocate posting the picture when you do, or making the satire clear in some way.

but, I am with you on "loose" for "lose." In GA there is a warning on the gasoline pumps, from the state govt. of all places, saying something to the effect, "If you don't pay for your gasoline you can loose your license." Drives me nuts. And, BTW, I'm not a spelling cop, but that one I just can't figure out. Surely, people know the difference in meaning.

But, I'll bet you see a lot more instances of it on FR than at DU.
