Can anyone explain to me if the sentiment is similar now as to what it was in Watergate? I was only in junior high at that time and my only interest was that they were interrupting my favorite tv shows with their boring hearings! Wish I'd paid more attention!

1. I remember very well, and we are getting to that point in time |

where most all will realize that this is much bigger than Watergate. The big difference is that the reporting was much better and not as limiting. Watergate was extremely slow taking off.
The biggy is the cover up on both debacles.

2. There's less honor now |
|
I remember Watergate well-was a real news junkie at the time. I recalled the Republicans in Congress being more honorable-they held up certain ideals-like the idea of treating the opposition with courtesy-that you don't see now. Remember that it was Barry Goldwater who talked to Nixon and told him it was time to hang it up. I don't recall the Democrats gloating or trying to make a lot of political points about what happened. They seemed to be more sad and concerned about the attack on the Constitution. And of course the news media actually investigated and reported the news.

3. Things were more intense during Watergate. |

It was widely suspected that Nixon was directly involved. The break in was also a crime that everyone could understand. The media wasn't controlled by the corporate right wing either. The Democrats controlled congress and had the guts to go after Nixon.
None of that is the case now. So far, Plamegate is mostly political junkie stuff. It probably will stay that way. A Cheney indictment would up it a notch, but it still wouldn't be like Watergate.
One thing though, if the trail leads clearly to Bush, this will make Watergate look small in comparison. It could open the whole can of worms on the lies that led us to war. The battle in congress will be monumental as the Repug majority does everything it can to minimize the damage.

Senate hearings actually uncovered the existence of the Nixon tapes.
There will be no Senate hearings on this because Republicans control the Senate. There would have to monumental evidence of wrong-doing for the right wing nuts in the Senate to ever allow hearings.
Republicans had honor then, at least enough to demand the truth.
