While I don't believe politics should get in the way of carrying out the law, there's nothing wrong with looking at the political considerations of the law being carried out. That being said while everyone is very anxious to get proceedings started, I believe it is best for the indictments and legal proceedings to get on the way later, closer to the 2006 elections, if this is the story dominating the news cycles in fall of '06 it will greatly increase the Dem's chances to take back the congress...

1. The longer it's in the public eye, the more it becomes accepted fact. |
|
Gradually, day by day, leak by leak, back-stab by back-stab, the American public is becoming aware that the Republican Party is a Culture of Corruption. One year is about the optimal gestation time for a massive multi-scandal of this scope. Fitz may well ask for an extension, and that's fine by me. If trials start about 8 months from now, that's perfect, I think.

3. Abramoff will bring down the entire GOP. |
|
He makes traitorgate look like small potatoes. He ties every top GOP operative directly to the Mafia, hit men, bribery, money laundering, etc. Good old-fashioned sleaze and thuggery that is easier for the public to understand than "some perjury technicality" (to quote KB Hutchison).

4. We have an election in Virginia |
|
this year and I was really hoping the indictments would come out before it so the Repugs would stay home. I am not naive enough to expect them to vote for the Democratic candidate.
But since I am a Dem and "think" and look at the big picture, maybe later would be better for the country as a whole.
You made a good point.

Since I have been pretty diapppointed with what I 've read on Kaine's site, I'm going to have to focus on national issues - we won't do all that well whichever "K" wins for governor. Actually, Potts' site (to my great surprise) impresses me more than DLC Kaine or RNC Kilgore.

We have to work on national issues, but Kilgore would really be another disgrace (after bush) that I would have to contend with. Kaine is a bit better.
