Just because they're sealed doesn't mean it'll take awhile to hear about them. He may have just sent them sealed last night so that all those who received an indictment would know that they were being indicted. It gives them a chances to either...

a) Prepare themselves for the media frenzy.

b) Since they don't know what they're being indicted for it gives them a chance to cooperate last minute now that they know they are being indicted.

36. Some insight about sealed grand jury indictments

(from a former reporter - me - who used to cover such goings-on).

First, the Grand Jury could well be done with setting the indictments, otherwise knowns as "returning true bills." However, these indictments, given the explosiveness of their nature and the people likely involved, probably will be sealed.

What that means is that the indictments probably have or will be returned today, but won't be open for public view until those indicted have either been notified or, yes, arrested (and indictment, afterall, is simply a more thoroughly-researched arrest warrant).

The good news for us by-standers in this case is that it's so high-profile, there probably will be many, many, many staffers - court officials, police officers, attorneys, etc. - who will leak the info that's contained in the sealed indictments (hell, I used to get tipped off by police, otherwise known as the Rona Barrett's of the neighborhood, about pending arrests in much less-high-profile cases).

So - hold your horses all. My feeling, based on everything I've just read at lunch is that the Grand Jury has returned some true bills and is still afixing others. We'll probably know something tonight or first thing in the morning.

Just an educated guess.

40. Usually they unseal them just after the person has been

either notified (in case they don't plan to arrest - just have them appear for a reading of the charge) or arrested.

In this case, I'm betting they don't arrest. These are high-profile people. Where are they going to hide? I'm guessing they notify them or their attorney and then set a date for them to appear before the judge for an arraignment (the reading of the official charge).

Is it feasible that Fitzgerald is just getting started and is attacking the most obvious criminal acts, in order to lay the foundation and obtain critical additional evidence that can be used to prosecute the more serious alleged violations of law?

Also, if all of that is true, then is it a far stretch to consider that Cheney may ultimately be in legal jeopardy?

Then Fitzgerald will ANNOUNCE them tomorrow. However, the principals may be talking tonight. They know who they are ... and they may want to get a jump on Fitzgerald breaking the news by putting their own spin on it. Just conjecture here. But there's no doubt in my mind that the GJ is finishing up today.

My guess is that indictments are at hand and this GJ term will expire -- but that Fitzgerald will empanel a new GJ to go after the Niger forgeries -- Dick Cheney -- and wherever it all leads. Fitz isn't letting go.
