Chertoff Urges Patience as Frustrations Surge Among Hurricane Wilma Victims

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff acknowledged delays Wednesday with getting gas, water and other supplies to Hurricane Wilma victims but urged patience as frustrations began surfacing among weary Floridians.

Though officials stocked supplies in the region before the storm hit, roadblocks in the form of debris, flooding and downed power lines have hindered efforts by federal and state responders to meet all needs, Chertoff said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"I have to say, in honesty, patience will be required for everybody," Chertoff said during his flight to Florida. "Under the best circumstances, even in the best planning, you still confront the physical reality of a destructive storm."

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez said he was "disappointed, angered" that the Federal Emergency Management Agency hadn't sent more emergency supplies and that some sites were running low of water and ice.

2. Ya mean the republican governor
needs federal assistance and people are being asked to have patience? I guess the state and local governments just weren't ready. Thank God Wilma wasn't the bad ass motherfucker that Katrina was and brought the disaster she did or the gop would force jeb to change parties. The republican party must be an ignorant magnet and a strong one too.

7. Wilma was just there - hasn't
even been 48 hours, has it? They'd better be counting their lucky stars that they weren't in New Orleans, where they waited for five to seven days.
