Bush Reinstates Davis - Bacon Act....

Bush Reinstating Wages for Katrina Work
By DEVLIN BARRETT

<SNIP> WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration will reinstate rules requiring that companies awarded federal contracts for Hurricane Katrina pay prevailing wages, usually an amount close to the pay scales in local union contracts.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., was among congressmen critical of the administration's decision to waive the requirement and who met Wednesday with White House chief of staff Andrew Card. He said Card told them the wage requirement would be reinstated Nov. 8.

<SNIP> In the immediate aftermath of Katrina, President Bush suspended provisions of the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act, which sets wages for employees on federal contracts to ensure they are not underpaid.

The administration contended the move would reduce rebuilding costs and help open opportunities to minority-owned companies, but unions and other critics said it would result in lower pay for workers.

Looks like even the Republicans thought this move was bad politics (although that has never stopped Bush before). Perhaps his sagging poll numbers and the pending indictments has made Bush realize his "Political Capital" was marginal at best?

12. I doubt the corporate media will touch on it at all...
There are indictments, and Wind Storms, and poor Tom Delay is getting attacked by partisan dogs... plus, theres probably a missing college co-ed somewhere in the US. Plenty of news... not enough time. :eyes:

He'll most certainly report this flip-flop.

edited to clarify: Dobbs was angry when Bush repealed the act, not the other way around.

16. well thank God, finally
Seeing the numbers of unemployed electricians, masons, construction workers that are NOLA LOCALS while they are letting these corporations rape these Mexican workers for 5 an hour has been killing me.

They need to be made to hire the locals first and foremost.
