1. Seems like just yesterday he was doing the Bush laundry list....
15 trucks of ice, 20,000 tons of RTE meals. The Bushes love lists. Now it is, YOU ALL should have been prepared. What did you expect from the feds? A decent job?

2. Eddie Schulz had a trucker call in from the fairgrounds in Ft Lauderdale
said he waited 36 hours in Jacksonville, and has been over 12 hours at the fairgrounds with a load of ice waiting to be dispatched.

he said there was over 500 trucks sitting there with him full of MREs water and ice. The National Guard is keeping them sitting until the word comes through where to send them

8. With a grain of salt I offer the following...
Guy called up Ed Schultz today. He is in Miami and just weathered Wilma. He's out of power and the power company recording says that it'll be a couple weeks before power will be restored.

He's been through Andrew and Christina and power was back fully restored in three days (Andrew) and 1 day (Christina).

His theory is that the power company wants to make people desperate and then jack up rates.

Given what Enron pulled and our current administrator, I can't just dismiss this as tin foil hat thinking.

I eagerly await indictments all around. I hope they're quick so we can rebuild our country and rebuild our reputation worldwide.

A lot of folks, especially in South Florida are very old and the majority of people are not super rich. Living in a disaster area gets old quick. Not having electric is a big deal, for many reasons and not just because it's uncomfortable.

43. I don't think the OP was bashing at all.
I understand what the OP was trying to say. The people of NOLA were ridiculed. Terrible things were said about them in the media. Comments such as "they did not have enough sense to evacuate," and "they were waiting around for their welfare checks." The victims were being blamed for the conditions they found themselves in. In addition, the democratic mayor and governor were also blamed. Now we see the same thing happening in Florida that occurred in NOLA yet we don't see the victims, mayors or governor being treated by the media or the public as the population and government official of Louisiana were treated. I think the OP was attempting to show the contrast. I had similar thoughts. FEMA has once again not done a good job.

Why, in a place that has been hit by multiple hurricanes in the past 18 months, folks don't even keep a few days' supply of fresh water on hand? I'm not even talking about your basic emergency supplies, but damn drinking water?

Sorry, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind (and my sympathy) around this. We live in WV, probably the place least likely to be hit by natural disasters, and we keep a stock of food, water and emergency supplies on hand at all times. I simply don't get it.

35. Especially at night it can get very scary.
The worse case scenarios start running through your mind. :scared:

Also, seems people don't understand that you need a hell of a lot of water to sustain your family for a week or more! You need water for cooking bathing, toilet time etc.

Without it, conditions can become quite unsanitary very quickly. And there is also no way to keep ice frozen, so you're constantly having to drink very warm beverages.

I know boo-freakin-hoo but go a few days in humid weather with nothing cool/cold to drink and tell me what it's like!

Also, the silence alone is enough to drive you insane. No humming of the fridge... nothing. Unless of course your lucky enough to have a colicky baby around. :)

36. And???
If I knew a hurricane was headed my way, I'd take the time to fill the tub with water. Also any buckets and containers I could find. Toilets can be flushed with this water, or even water from a dehydrator. You can wash from a sink rather than soak in a tub.

My partner and I keep a clean, 55 gallon metal trash can (with a trash bag liner) on hand so in case of an emergency we can quickly fill it and have enough water to get by. We save our plastic water and beverage containers and keep them clean and filled with water. Right now we have at least 40-50 gallons of fresh drinking water on hand.

Please, don't give me some sob story about the humidity. How warm was it in Florida today? My partner and I were trapped in a blizzard for four days with no way out, no heat and no electricity. Try that on for size.

And if your afraid of the dark, try getting a few oil lamps. They actually work without a switch.

38. And, how long do you think all of this water will last? Perhaps a week?
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 06:01 PM by Pepper32
Depending on the size of your family. But I am hearing stories about power not being restored for a month!

I doubt if a tub of water will last anyone that damn long. Sorry.

OIL LAMPS?? LOL, OK. It has nothing to do with being scared of the dark. I was thinking more along the line of break-ins etc.

I'm just speaking from experience. Where I was somewhat prepared, as the Black Out came without warning. During that time it was beyond humid, many elderly folks died due to heat exhaustion. However, I guess it was their fault.

39. I'm talking about the folks who did NOTHING to prepare
Edited on Wed Oct-26-05 08:19 PM by theHandpuppet
There's really no excuse for not having even a few days of water on hand, especially when you have warning that a hurricane is on the way. People were lining up IMMEDIATELY after the storm, many in their Escalades and Explorers. Funny they could remember to fill up their gas guzzlers but not pick up a few gallons of drinking water.

Being without power for a month is not what I'm talking about here and you know it. Nor am I referring to the elderly, the sick or the infirm. That's a knee-jerk argument. And you didn't answer my question about the weather in Florida today. Seeing that it's almost November, I sincerely doubt anyone is going to keel over from heat exhaustion.

But I'll tell you this. We have freeze warnings here tonight. Should the power fail we have stockpiled wood for the fireplace. There's enough food in the pantry to last several months, water enough for several weeks of drinking/washing, oil lamps for light, a crank lantern and a solar-powered radio. If we need hot food there's a camping stove, but our backyard grill would do. Add that to our other emergency supplies and we could make do. That doesn't mean we'd be comfy, but surviving doesn't always include having all the conveniences. Being prepared has taken effort and diligence, but it is well worth it.

So you'll have to pardon me if I seem a little less than sympathetic towards those who have the means to be prepared but obviously didn't bother... in fact, some of these folks weren't even prepared to survive one or two days without being able to pick up what they need at the mall. I call that irresponsible if not downright dumb.

40. You're twisting the argument, damned if I know why
The issue theHandpuppet raised is why do able-bodied people neglect to make basic preparations that are entirely within their power to control.

There's nothing you can do about heat if your AC goes out, but if you're young, healthy, and flush enough with money to afford an SUV, then you can stockpile a week's worth of food that does not require cooking and at least a few day's worth of water. Plus ordinary emergency supplies like lamps, first aid, solar or battery-powered radio, etc.

Don't wait for the news of an approaching hurricane or the possibility of an earthquake to run to the store and stock up. Every household should always be prepared, precisely because there may be little or no warning when disaster hits.

Emergency workers should be free to concentrate on helping the elderly, the handicapped and the ill, and those whose homes were destroyed. Everyone else should be able to to fend for themselves for at least a few days, until the crisis has begun to stabilize.

She/he (HP)responded to my post and THEN we went back fourth over dumb shit that's really getting old.

I agree you should stock up on survivor items as much as possible. However, certain things you can't prepare for, like being without electricity for a more than a week. Perhaps if you are single you can and there is always the option of evacuating. If you have the means to do so...

Feel better now?

41. I'd be kinder and say they're just complacent
There appear to be several generations of Americans who are accustomed to getting what they need, when they need it, at the local mall. They don't think ahead, don't think in terms of disaster preparedness, and expect that someone else will immediately make things right when things go wrong.

Again, bracing myself for everyone who will gleefully distort my intent, I am NOT talking about some poor 85-year-old grandmother whose house has been flooded up to the second floor. That is a disaster that goes beyond basic preparedness.

I'm specifically addressing the healthy, able-bodied, comfortably employed people whose house is left basically intact but who wake up without electricity or municipal water. That situation is irritating, even uncomfortable, but the discomfort would be whole lot less if they didn't have to wait in line for five hours to get a bottle of water.

Whenever a snow storm is forecast in my region you can bet that thousands of people will panic at the last minute and fight crowds to strip the store shelves of water and milk. I don't have to do that because I already have everything from bottled water and powdered milk to peanut butter and canned foods already stocked.

It's just common sense to be prepared for the most likely scenarios. Why would anyone living in a coastal region during hurricane season be so unwilling to make that effort?

Oh it's amazing. I said in another post, and I will again, THOSE WINDS WERE BEYOND FREAKING on Monday morning. That crap wook me up out of a ROCK SOLID sleep, shook the house HARD! I thought certain it was a tornado. "And now place head between legs and kiss ass BUH BYE!" It HAD to be 100 mph guts, and 70-80 sustained! IMAGINE WHAT IT WAS LIKE SOUTH OF HERE?!?!? UGH! Almost EVERY plant outside is now tilted to the SOUTH cuz the winds were constant from the North, with slight variance to NE and NW.

I'm still amazed my area fared so well. I think that last year, with Francis & Jeanie, all the "weaker" trees got ripped up, and there wasn't all that much left for now!

But damn, all those pix I've seen from Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Miami, I mean, HOLY SHIT. If they ain't giving out MREs down there, SOMETHING IS GODDAMN WRONG. Oh wait, excuse me, who's are dickhead governor again?! Oh yeah, I forgot! :puke:

The American people and the people of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic seaboard need to get one thing very clear.

THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT GIVE A RAT'S ASS IF YOU LIVE OR DIE. IF YOUR ELDERLY MOTHER, CHILDREN OR PETS SUFFER HORRIBLY. THEY DO NOT CARE.

There, I hope that clears that up. We're very, very clear on this one point here in California where the seasons are flood, fire, earthquake and riot. That's why we have two Democratic senators and a Dem legislature.

We just drove my mom back down to Vero Bch today. Half the city is without electric, she is one of the lucky ones. Half of her park is without, they just got a small delivery of ice and water, not from Fema, but local walmart! There are no areas to get supplies, my mom's neighbor called and asked where is the help! He was told they didn't know there was a need! The lines at gas stations were so long, we were just shocked. Yes Jebbie is doing a great job, at least he said so! Its just us whinney Floridians. Before Fema joined Homeland we neverhad a problem getting what was needed. Our area is flooded, as we had 10- 12 inches of rain, it is quite a mess ,but our local sheriff dept is right on the job, we are getting serious help from locals. Our creek met the lake and water has no where to go, St. Johns is flowing and our whole area looks like a large lake. When we built, we had the pad built up several feet, we are dry, acre nest to us under 2 feet water, it is really wierd to see it. Mother nature cannot be compromised, we have to bend to her will, just another lesson for all to learn! You either love Fl or leave it!
