8. I would argue
that 99% of people in government do their jobs every day. Most civil servants and elected officials are there because they truly care about government.

Don't slander all the good people because of a handful of crooks.

Every govt. employee I know is a very hard worker. My friend in FLA with the Federal government has been working 17-hour days since the 17th and won't have a day off for 3-4 weeks.

the discussion is about whether or not we should revere Fitzgerald for doing a competent job.

This sub-thread is about whether government workers are lazy assholes or diligent, caring people.

33. oh, come on. I was merely pointing out that people aren't used to
gov't officials having *any integrity* -- at least not the ones in public roles.

That's what this discussion is about. Main thread and sub-thread.

39. ok
now we're getting somewhere.

I believe the vast majority of government officials have integrity. They're well-meaning people who want to do a good job. Some of them suck at it, but that's true of any profession.

The "public roles" come and go. They last four, maybe eight, years. The career people stay there and do a pretty damned good job.

My parents receive their Social Security check every month. My neighbor on Medicare gets taken care of. The highways are passable.

Could it be better? Of course it could. And any decent Democratic president would make sure it gets better. The Republicans just want to make it worse so that they can let their friends take over the business.

41. I don't dispute any of that, in particular, and good avatar, btw
But: The government has, in the main, been the enemy of the people in its routine collusion with big business, which has happened steadily if not since the Civil War, then certainly since WW II.

This doesn't mean that good, decent people don't occupy desks, or even occasionally, chairs in the House or Senate.

But it does mean that, taken as an institution our government has failed its citizenry.

Quick example: the ravages of global warming. We know the Repugs won't do anything about it. But the Dems were too afraid to let us "handle the truth," as well.

46. Fair enough
Now we're discussing whether or not Government has worked, overall, on the big issues.

I agree with you that government had NOT done well on the big issues. But why is that? Because we have a (limited) democracy. People don't care about the big issues.

Our country is lacking BIG leaders. I love Gore, Kerry, Mondale, et. al., but where are the FDR's and the JFK's? The other side had Reagan, and they've been riding that corpse-sled down the mountain for 20 years. We need to do the same.

We let them trash Clinton - who was the best president of the second half of the 20th Century - so he's out of bounds now.

We need a great Democratic President who will once again convince Americans that government is a good thing.

49. While Clinton clearly was light-years ahead of Bush,
in that he was sane, for starters -- even if self-serving -- he was terrible on environmental policy. As terrible as these guys? No. Did he do what needed to be done? No.

So -- if one party is evil, and the other won't "lead" -- per your comments above -- where does that leave us?

I haven't even touched the corporate stuff, the "media monopoly" bill Clinton signed, etc.

That's my point -- government is in collusion with corporations. It's always a miracle when someone like Fitzgerald seems to have a higher interest...

20. Yup!

That's my experience, too.

The Republicans want to convince us that government is bad, that government can't work, that it's all a big boondoggle.

Therefore, they make SURE that government doesn't work. It's their modus operandi.

Fuck 'em. We need government, we can make it work, and it's a good thing.

Government can be a force for good, when run by people who believe it to be so. When run by those with contempt for government, not so much.

13. I respect Fitz because he is doing his job, and doing it well.
If he wanted to he could leak as much selective information as he wanted to tilt the case in the court of public opinion one way or another, and be a partisan hack like Starr.

However, he is not. He's kept and extremely tight lid on his case and is playing it completely by the book, which is why it's so hard for FOX and Co. to smear him.

Just in my little unimportant world, we are waging a war against a corrupt school district, and a water war. That is just my little town, population 15,000. There is no courage here at all. And if you dare to stand up, you can expect death threats. I don't think it is as easy as it used to be to stand up for an opposing point of view.

26. I think you're forgetting what history hast taught us.
If you recall, Ken Starr was the most recent Special Prosecutor that made headlines. He had more leaks than the Titanic! He kept his face on the TV for YEARS!!!!

Now, people see this new Special Presecutor. He's been investigating the case for 2 years, yet most people wouldn't know him if he held a door for them. The MSM is NUTS because his office hasn't leaked a damn thing! He consistently answers "No comment" to every question.

Fitz appears to be behaving like the public believes prosecutors should, and when they compare his MO to Starr's, they can't help but admire Fits, by far!

Think of all the entities and people that did NOT do their job in the face of this fascist administration. The repube controlled congress has been a facilitator, even many of the dems. The SCOTUS put the simp in office in the 1st place and has done little to slow down a damn thing. Even the 4th estate has done more than look the other way but has abetted and covered for the most criminal group of thugs in the history of this country. There have been a few that have spoken out but in the MSM it has fallen on deaf ears.

NOBODY has done their job, at least those in a position to do something about it, until Fitz. I have no doubt that tremendous pressure has been put on him and his assistants. Hell, if he were married and had a family this whole thing may have fallen off the radar screen months ago.

Admitedly, we don't know the results yet and it is possible they will be very dissappointing. If that is the case I will forever lose my faith in the USA, whose founding principles I cherish. But as of now, I see Fitzgerald as the last great hope of any kind of check or balance against the blatant corruption that has taken over our government.

He is not a deity, but IMHO he may be the last hope for the success of the great American experiment. I pray he is all we perceive him to be.

48. Don't count them out, they are like cockroaches
Look at what happened after Watergate. 4 years under Carter, an honorable, honest man and then he was trashed for 8 years of a senile actor and Iran-Contra. The public was so upset that we had 4 years of poppy.... They forced the left to the middle, even middle right and the sheeple were none the wiser.... It's been the same players all along, and the same sugar daddies backing them....

However, if it comes out in the MSM that we were lied into a war. If 1/10th of the shit that had happened under this admin becomes part of the public consciousness it will break their backs forever.
