Fundamentaism take a huge wrong turn when it tries to bully non-adherants or iompose its curent thoughts upon the larger society...bo doube.
But at the same time I think there is value in fundamentaism to the extent that is serves as a bastion of orthdoxy and a guard agaianst a sect's slide in to exisitentialism and modernity. Not that they are right on every point WITHIN the religion, not they they are not oversealosu i many way. simply that without them most sects would fall apart due to lack of cohesion. To move way way from time honored Doctrine within the sect... you should have to fight for it.
I am simply saying thata natural fundamentism has value within a religion... not outside.

Here's why...
If the Monkey or Darth Evil (The VP) went on national TV and said...
"Liberals are a danger to this country. Liberals undermine the war on terror and hate our troops. They must be stopped"
Many of these people (and when I think of "fundies" I don't necessarily think of Christian Fundamentalists) would pick up a weapon and start shooting within minutes.
THAT'S why I distrust them. I don't hate them. Like any other group, including our little community, there are both good and bad.
But, since I own a few weapons myself, they don't want to come to my address.
THAT'S WHY.

|
they are misguided and they are causing damage in the name of the lord that effect my children and my childrens friends. they are fighting so hard to have jesus in their heart as they push christs words away from them out of fear and ignorance. those that preach to them see a way to control them, using their fears, in order to have more power themselves in the most greedy and corrupt way. totally opposite of christs words
you dont have a choice, i dont hate them. this is a poor poll only allowing the answer you want. hate....
hate does nothing but feed into the pain the fundamentalists are creating now.

don't hate them, but I get tired of their myopic view that they and their beliefs have some special place in my life. I don't want to hear their views on religion, I have heard them and consciously rejected them. I don't want to have them bless me, pray for me, or really even talk to me about their belief system. I don't care about their feelings "as Christians", but I might care about their feelings on issues if they were willing to leave their belief system out of it.

Hate is a disease, in my opinion, and I don't allow it to infect me.
I pity them, because their view is so narrow they are blinded to the beauty of the world and her people that surrounds them every day.
I distrust them, because they can't be depended on to think independently, make independent decisions, and choices based on the greater good.
I disagree with their choices. They've chosen to be sheep, and to let others do the thinking and leading. They follow, obey, and repeat rhetoric that they don't understand and don't live by. They're refusal to think and make ethical choices brings harm to others, so I get angry.
Pity, anger, distrust, disagreement, yes. Hate, no.

21. love the fundie -- hate fundamentalism |
|
Since I was raised around fundamentalist and my last remaining living relative besides my atheist brother is my right wing fundamentalist 84 year-old Aunt Betty - I know that many--if not most of them a reasonably nice people outside of their twisted political and religious world view. Most were either raised and have lived their entire lives in this very narrow interpretation of reality or turned to it when they faced crisis in their personal life. It is system which answer everything in a very uncertain world.
Some years ago I got to know a small community of Marxist-Leninist. I was amazed how similar their basic thought patterns are. They both claim absolute moral certainty. They both have an answer for everything.

In the past, most Fundamentalists avoided political involvement. Their faiths often had a history of oppression by Established Churches.
I remember when the Religious Right took over the Texas Republican Party. Since then, the partnership has grown & both groups have "prospered."

27. Well, you know, there's hate and then there's *hate* |
|
I hate aspects of fundamentalism that try to impose what I feel are regressive, authoritarian characteristics on society. I like the ideal of the modern, progressive, secular society that we've been struggling towards in the U.S. since it's inception. And I hate it when one group, albeit one of many, tries to turn back the clock; a group that embraces the ideas and concepts that are more at home in the 16th C. than the 20th or 21st centuries. So yeah, I hate that aspect of fundamentalism that wants to impose a theocracy and opposes democracy.
Then there's the hate of the individual and that I don't have. I really wonder how someone can abdicate their personal autonomy to an entity that I don't believe exists or allows another group to use their theistic belief against them. But I don't hate them.

...it makes it that much easier to exterminate those who would infect the body politic. We are their scapegoat, their "other", inferior to them.
How can you NOT hate people who think of you that way, and are clearly not far from the mentality of "Make the World a better Place: Hang a Liberal."

|
Not to mention Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Ralph Reed, etc. As Bono says in his current Rolling Stone interview, these guys are the "traders (money changers) in the temple" Not the true believers in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
And the red state "Christians" buy into this crap because they don't actually READ their bibles. Their interpretation of Scripture comes either from their own pastor, or from these televangelist bastards.
If you sent your kids to school and they had a math teacher who told them that 2 + 2 = 5, and then never encouraged them to open a math book or even pick up a calculator, how long would that teacher have a job?
