Churches misconstrue Christ as "hippie Jesus"
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 12:16 AM by phusion
This LTTE appeared in my college newspaper today.

Militant Jesus?

edit: it's a LTTE not an editorial.

-----

Editor,

Ralph Arellanes Jr. has dropped some rather tempting bait in his letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, no doubt wanting a reaction, so I'm biting. I will not attempt to refute his claim that Republicans are ignorant of Scripture, except to say that the ignorance is not confined to any one particular political party. I am more concerned with his assertion that Christ is a peacenik, comparable to Michael Moore.

I do not blame Arellanes for his assumptions, as his upbringing is partly to blame. Both Catholic and Protestant churches have become obsessed with the individual I like to call "hippie Jesus." We have all seen him: long, flowing blonde hair, blue eyes and lots of warm fuzzy feelings. The Lion of Judah has been declawed, turned into a fuzzy plush toy. Yes, Christ did advocate peace, but not in the way our society likes to twist it. The peace we are promised will not and cannot come while man is on earth.

"Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword," Christ says in Matthew 10:34.

As for Christ's command to us regarding peace, we are indeed told that peacemakers are blessed, and that we should love our neighbors. However, how do we show love for the tyrannical leader who persecuted his own people, killing thousands? There comes a point when love must be harsh in order to protect. We live in a fallen world, and we cannot escape without blood on our hands. Should it be the blood of one, or of many?

Pray that God will forgive us for what we do, but even more importantly, pray he will forgive us for what we don't do.

2. Peace is provocative.
Preach peace and you bring turmoil to tranquil tyranny.

14. Which one could see is the meaning behind the ONE quote he used--
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 12:25 AM by chalky
IF he'd bothered to use it in context.
But no, quoting out of context is "job one" for these clowns. Why should they mess up a good gig just because they're quoting Jesus Christ?

Amazing--pages and pages of quotes speaking of "turning the other cheek" and "he who is without sin"--not one mention. The jackass shoved those out of the way and pawwed frantically through the new testament to find that one verse he could twist like a crazy-straw to fit his agenda.

17. Exactly
In Mark chapter sixteen Jesus said to go out and preach the good news. Not hate against people. But twisting the Bible is one of many reason's I'm against religion being involved with the government. Anybody can twist things for their own agenda.

3. this letter writer says He/she hates george w bush -->
as you can clearly see from this quote:

"However, how do we show love for the tyrannical leader who persecuted his own people, killing thousands?"

btw I remember the blonde haired blue eyed "Breck shampoo" Jesus from before the hippie days, so that kinda description of the white jesus is nothing new.

and I thought the guy was not christ until he died and came back, merely jesus the man.

guess those southern baptists had it all wrong.

6. couldn't those guys deal with something more constructive
than wondering about what four different poorly translated versions written 1900 years ago by guys that never met the person you refer to (only quoted once by a Roman historian) tell about the same person was doing or not doing or thinking...

like gardening, collecting stamps.. I don't know

7. Sometimes it seems like human nature is based on violence.
All of humanity needs a good healthy hobby, like maybe zen or introspection or just making sure we are always helping someone other than ourselves. Maybe we could evolve by intelligent design to think for ourselves. Just rambling here now.

18. Yes, I've heard of this fundy militant Jesus.
They are SO wacked. LOL!

They can't HANDLE his peaceful teachings because it runs contrary to what they support, so they just turn him into some kind of Middle Eastern rambo. Birkenstocks and an AK-47, right?

Sorry, but he was a peacenik.
