Fundraiser: Please Help...DUers in Dire Straits

Last Sunday, as he came to pick me up from work, Everythingsxen had a car accident that ruined our still-not-paid-for van. The van cost $2500, but it had a brand-new $3000 engine in it that we are still paying off, and the repairs it would require to make it run again are more than $3000. We have liability insurance, but don't make enough to get full coverage, so insurance isn't going to pay for it.

That van was our only transportation, because we both work late shifts when the buses have stopped running. We're dead broke right now from paying medical bills, and I just got another $400 bill in the mail for my latest bout with methicillin-resistant staph. Without transportation, we can't work, and will lose our jobs and, ultimately, wind up on the street. We have already gone to our families for help, but neither of us has a well-off family and they're already tapped-out.

So, Xen and I need a miracle; and that's where I hope DU can help. This has been my cyber-home for years now, and Xen and I met here. I've watched DUers pull together to make miracles happen before, and I fervently hope you can do it again. I only need enough money to buy a working, drivable car, and maybe pay something toward medical costs.

Hopefully some of the more comfortable DUers who have been writing about their pleasure in being able to help others out will see your thread and be able to chip in.

Too bad there isn't an emergency fund set up that could accept contributions and make grants for DU-ers. A pool of a few thousand dollars wouldn't be hard for a membership this big to raise and maintain. Not by the admins here, but by a committee. Ugnmoose has experience as a financial planner, for example.

Anyway, I hope things work out for you. You are right to fight now, before you lose your jobs.

I'm hoping we find buyers. The engine was only a few months old, after the original engine blew a head gasket and Xen and I couldn't get a car loan (he has no credit history, and I have a bunch of medical debt and stuff left over from when my ex wrote bad checks on our business account).

The repair place offered us a couple hundred dollars for the engine, but Xen's mom (who was a mechanic in the Marines) says it should go for at least $1000. It cost us $3000.

The engine and transmission are both fine; it's just the frame and radiator that are smashed. The estimate from the repair shop was a whopping $5 grand to fix, so we're just going to have to buy another car...

So far, we've raised about $1300 toward a new vehicle! :bounce: And DUers have, once again, come through for their own--something I've never seen anyone on RW political forums do.

I like the idea of a rotating DU trust fund that could give hardship grants to members in financial crisis. Is there anyone here who has experience in accounting or anything similar?

I just have to say it again--DUers are top-notch! I am so grateful that you have saved us!

And they have a non-profit organization whose sole purpose is to maintain a fund to help members or their families in times of need or emergency. The fund has a board of directors who each year allocate money in secret based on the requests. I know that sounds funky, but it actually works quite well. Donations to the fund are 100% tax deductable. I had recently been thinking it could be a good idea set up a non-profit Democratic Underground Fund...

Majorly sucks to be on the edge between getting by and complete financial disaster - it is no fun.

Hopefully Tucker can make enough here to get out of the hole so she doesn't lose her job... help her out if you can...

And if you worry about the cause, don't, because chances are you gave at least $10 to corrupt Republicans at the gas pump in the last week or two.

At least in this case you know you'll be giving the money to someone who puts in time as a moderator for something you care about, the DU. ;)
