I'm not sure this outcome is a great thing for America.
Miers WAS unqualified, for sure. But the problem is that her nomination was brought down by the power of the extreme right wingers. That means that Bush's next nominee will no doubt be hand-picked by the likes of James Dobson, Pat Robertson, etc. Bush will need to satisfy them because he is so weak right now.
And, because the GOP is controlled by the religious right, the Republicans in the Senate will rubber-stamp any nominee the American Taliban approves of.
If the next nominee is an extremist, I really hope the Democrats and the very few moderate Senate Republicans use the power of the filibuster. We simply cannot allow the most radical fringes of the right wing pick the US Supreme Court.
