prediction: new scotus nod to be announced within 1 hr. of the indictments
miers' withdrawal was pretty obviously inevitable pretty early on. my bet is that, if they haven't had a second nominee waiting in the wings all along, is that they kept miers in the game long enough to get their ducks in a row for the backup plan.

now they're just waiting for an opportune time to make the announcement, and distraction from the indictments would be consistent with their m.o.

4. How would you like to be
the person who came in second to Harriet Miers? Talk about damning with faint praise!
