From last night's DC vigil:
More update from Karen at the White House vigil:

One of the Gold Star moms for Peace was standing next to Karen and she broke down in tears when one of the very loud, strident opposition people came up and was yelling right in front of her. Karen broke off so that she could step in between and provide a hug.

The police are now in the process of arresting people who chose to stay in the "die-in". Everyone's singing Down by the Riverside. Mark Brisky is there too and called out hello to everyone here.

First...
Read Gilda's entry here:

http://www.democracycellproject.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=261&view=findpost&p=3244

Gilda is the woman I ran into tonight who was standing in front of one of the vilest people I have ever run into. She was shrieking at Gilda about her son, who was killed in Iraq, but she is OK about it because he volunteered and knew what he was getting into.

Nothing wrong with believing your son died for a good cause, but she was yelling at Gilda for grieving for her own son.

Gilda had moved away from her, and was starting to tear up, so I put my arms around her and told her that the woman was not worth listening to.

She began to sob, and she said, "There are so many more like her out there." I pointed across the street, at the good people lying on the sidewalk, many of them intending to be arrrested for the truth. I hoped to get her to see that there are many of us working hard every day to bring our children home, many more than there are people who feel compelled to scream at people at a peaceful protest.

She shook her head, I stepped away for a minute and she was gone.

So to all you good people, let's make sure that Gilda's pain is not replicated over and over. Leave her a message on that thread in the forum, or here, and show her how many of us do care, and are doing whatever we can.

:( So sad how they're so vile. Ugh. If only they knew what they were doing. *sigh* I hope she's okay. As Jesus said: "forgive them for they know not what they do."

2. I cannot understand disrespecting a grieving mother.
I feel nothing but sorrow & sadness for people who lost their loved ones & still support the war. I can disagree with them & still respect their sacrifice & grief.

I have to believe it is just their fear & ignorance that makes them so angry they would lash out at a grieving mother.

:grouphug: to all those grieving & fighting for truth, peace & justice.

3. I don't get it either
I went to Crawford, I saw it with my own eyes. These people are so vile and so hateful it is hard to understand, even after witnessing their wrath. They are like children losing an argument but determined to win at any cost.

That this thread has been picked up and commented upon here:

the conservative underground (link removed per DU policy)

It is not rude or trollish, but it is an interesting contrast in insight.

There is one factual misstatement just recently added at the bottom about the number of protesters at the White House. Based on my conversation with Karen while she was at the vigil,

Karen and Dick estimated 400-500 anti-war protesters were there along with 15-20 very loud, strident anti-Cindy protesters. Many joined Cindy Sheehan in a "die in" where they laid down in front of the White House in an attempt to give visual meaning to the number of dead. It was announced very clearly that the police would give three verbal warnings before arresting anyone for lying down in front of the White House. Those who were not prepared to be arrested got up and left the "die in" area before the third warning. I believe a much smaller number remained lying down in the "die in" after the 3rd warning and let themselves be arrested along with Cindy Sheehan.
