Wondering about the withdrawal of Miers
Happy about it, but the next will be a fight as well.
However, the timing is peculiar.
The timing of her nomination was peculiar and the timing of her withdrawal was peculiar.
Since when does Georgie give up this easily?
Anyway...anyone else think that the reason might be because she is implicated in Plame deeper than we can all imagine? Or the fact that Bush knows he is going to need his best attorney in the coming weeks?
Who knows...but at least that is one less worry.
I just wish that for ONCE this administration would seek to unite our country, but instead, I'm sure we can look for another divisive candidate.

1. Divisive was good this time

because she divided his base.

I don't think Bush is happy to lose her. Her mission on the SC was to keep his soft white ass out of jail.

He desperately needs to rally his base.... or he's totally fckd.
Just watch.... hardcore reichwing nominee in exchange
for unwavering support through the indictments/impeachments.

3. I've been torn about the Miers choice from the beginning.
I think the next nominee will be Brown, Owen, Jones, or Olsen. To ME, the unknown was more acceptable than the KNOWN extreme!

Those would certainly satisfy the RW extreme!

I realize Shrub desperately needs their support now, and I don't think there's a damn thing the Dems can do to stop him.

8. I have NO idea what Matthews is doing. I doubt Shrub will pick
Olsen. I was surprised that he picked Miers at age 60, and Olsen is 64!

6. You see, at Fitzmas time
Scrooges need as much support as they can muster. This is obviously a concession to the base.

7. It Will Be a Fire-breathing Fundie Next Time
We don't have enough power left to stop any of his nominees,
but the Fundies obviously do.

10. And the Miers withdrawl will be reframed as a Dem push
which will mean that the Fundies will (despite all evidence to the contrary) blame us for her not succeeding.

Miers was terrible. But I fear we're about to experience something worse.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't oppose Miers...I did and do...it just means I'm very very worried that the nutburger we're likely to get next won't have her obvious flaws to the RWingers...and we'll have Scalia #2 sitting on SCOTUS.

11. Bush lied about the reasons for her withdrawl: document request.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/miers_withdraws

"The White House said Miers had withdrawn because of senators' demands to see internal documents related to her role as counsel to the president."

DUers will remember:

August 6, 2005:
"The Justice Department refused yesterday to turn over documents about Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. that Senate Democrats have demanded...."

Yet Roberts did not withdraw and was easily confirmed.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/05/AR2005080501555.html

Todays bu$h statement is an obvious lie, yahoo said she withdrew because, "Bush's conservative backers had doubts about her ideological purity, and Democrats had little incentive to help the nominee...."
