Ah hell, do you know what Meirs withdrawing means?? |
|
Since when George was making her introduction he said something along the lines of "out of everyone she's the most qualified". With her gone that means we're gonna end up with who he sees as the next most qualified *sigh*

1. Ha! Ha! Unfortunately, I think it will be much worse... |
|
he will have to ask one of the evil ones for their advice again. Probably get some real crazed activist RW judge that will spit RW talking points every time he/she opens their mouth.

7. Oh yes. I was anxiously awaiting her words of wisdom. |
|
If half as bad as her written comments to the Cmtee, would have been priceless.

11. Maybe it will be a fetus |
|
and the fetus will have to rule on a case to save it's own life from a wild-eyed abortionist. Now that's compelling!

5. It's like Al Qaeda's #3 guy |
|
There are an unlimited number of "most qualified" in Bushco's world, just like there are an unlimited number of #3 guys. The method is exactly the same: If you kill a terrorist, he is automatically elevated to #3 status, and if Bushco nominates someone, they automatically become "most qualified".

6. Bush stated, on the record, that Meirs was "the most qualified." |
|
We've really got him on that, don't we?
Doesn't that mean, essentially, that, according to Bush, his next nominee will not be as qualified as Meirs??

16. Yes, if George nominates an ideologue, we should storm the battlements. |
|
And not back off. It's about time the Dems did that, in concert.

18. uh, he tried to appease moderate Republicans |
|
using Miers. Now he's in trouble with moderate Republicans if he nominates a wacko the hardliners want.
There are now three gauntlets a nominee has to run- moderate R's (honestly ambivalent or pro-Roe), hardline R's (anti-Roe), and Democrats (relatively high qualifications and serious knowledge of the Constitution).
I don't think the Bush people have anyone left who can run all three- Roberts was able to squeeze through because neither Republican side really tightened the screws and Democrats decided with those two seats open they could well afford to let one go.
Miers exposed the contradiction and caused intensification of it within Republicans. And one reason the intensification is so great is that the electorate has slipped from stalemated to pro-Roe over the past couple of months, making moderate Republican Senators more confident/adamant and anti-Roe hardliners more desperate.
Specter told Bush that he had to let some time pass after the Roberts nomination- but Genius Boy is pent on figuring it out the hard way.
