Boy, this is amazing.....all of these people in Cancun are stranded. The Senator is ending the interview because she is going after him.

2. I think the people who expect direct intervention of US government ...
... when they have difficulties (no matter how serious) overseas are truly misguided. (Cynicism: Only corporations can expect the military's intervention.)

The very reason the State Department issues travel advisories is based on the fact that the sole legitimate intervention is diplomatic and advcacy ... not force. If the government in the foreign country isn't responsive to such issues, that's just too bad. The cartoonish notion that H. Ross Perot will come to the rescue of overseas travelers is a fiction reserved for the very privileged, not the hoi polloi.

5. Yes and no
the State Department USED to have plans in place to evac Americans, I was involved in more than one of these wonderful events, (not), but the fact that everythnig is failing is on purpose, gov'ment does not work remeber, gov'ment is the problem, reagan told us so and now they are making sure it becomes the truth

13. I suspect Vicente has gone international ok
call it a sneaky suspicion but I suspect it went like this

City, we can't handle it,

State Governornment, we can't handle it

Feds, place the call

Why am I saying that? free clue, the cruise ship with supplies to be used for evacuation, would not be coming in otherwise.

10. The tour operators are getting their people out
but if you are an independent traveler you're screwed. I was reading some of the articles and people have run out of cash cause they can't access atm networks.

12. A private tour operator is NOT a governmental agency.
Where's the Red Cross? Where's Scaife? (He can afford it.) Where're the various private US interests?

3. "We MUST be very careful not to violate international law",
says Sen. Grassley. Huh? It's never slowed them down before! What's Mexico gonna do, go to the UN for SANCTIONS? What is the problem here? Once again, people are dying, pleading for aid from their own government and getting another bureaucratic run-around!
