12. Hey, I used to live on Orr Springs road.
I miss it like you wouldn't believe. I'm even actively trying to find a way to come back home. Where people seem like humans. :)

2. Awesome!
Does anyone know what conditions qualify for "medical marijuana?" Can physicians arbitrarily decide?

5. The conditions are:
approximately $75 and a good doctor ;-)

At least that's how they are in Oakland and Berkeley. Can't say for sure how they are in Santa Cruz :)

13. The Compassionate Use Act of 1996 is very broad
Doctor's cannot prescribe Schedule 1 Narcotics so the proper term is recommend. Doctor's can recommend cannabis for any condition that it might help and since cannabis helps so many things, almost anyone should be able to qualify for a recommendation. Inflammation research is telling of the importance of controlling inflammation and indicating a true role for cannabis. You could claim it helps you relax which it all but has to help you relieve stress which is a point often made by Willy Nelson. Research this year says that when nerve cell A is shouting to nerve cell B, cannabis will send back the message to tone it down.

Cannabis can be recommended legitimately for alcoholism. And there are always the migraines, ulcerous colitus, Crohn's Disease, and IBM diseases that would qualify. There is a big question among the cannabis wonks about all use being medical. I am of the belief that all use is medical as there are benefits that come with use even if that use is recreational.

The FDA definition of medicine is anything that is better than a placebo. To show you how upside down all the prohibitionist propaganda is all you have to do is take their repeated repeated statement about "Marijuana has no medical value." It is the fact that it has tremendous medical value that makes it so opposed by the pill companies that are now engaged in what Richard Cowan calls the pharmaceuticalization of cannabis. Freedom, science, truth, and health be damned when there is money to be mined.

All the medical research has been blocked by the Schedule One Lie that says marijuana has no medical value. There are three conditions that are to be met for a schedule 1 classification and an arguement can be made that there are Schedule One Lies for the government position on all three requirements. If you follow cannabis policy/attitude you would have long understood how controlled the media is, because one of the things you will not be allowed to see is a discussion of the proper classification of cannabis. The question of proper classification is highly suppressed so there are not very many answers to furnish.

A political answer is to move it to Schedule 2 so that states could begin to do real research and implement true medpot policies. It is my belief that because of the past demonization most researchers would claim a Schedule 4 is proper, but I can see Schedule 5 as being intellectually sound. Either way, the government position is considered a lie to be defended with Hitler Big Lie tactics. People are suffering and dying all because of another government lie. And the worst part is that cannabis should have never been made illegal in the first place, much less still prohibited with federal hegemony in 2005.

4. I love Santa Cruz as well.
I'd recommend this thread, but my alternate handle (I use this one at school) does not have enough posts on it to recommend yet.

7. Surfing Lighthouse Point in Winter storms, 1982-83.
The lines of breakers 15 ft. high came in and sprayed the spectators on cliffs 75 ft. above. One of life's peak moments.

I lived in a little, drafty shack on the edge of the Park, worked as a welder during the day, and wrote my column for the Santa Cruz Express late at night.

Anyone remember Buzz Buzore, the Express editor. Anyone remember the Express? I understand Sam Farr may retire from Congress, is that true?

8. Back in the eighties there were so many drugs going through that town.
CA counterculture vibe as I perceive it is uniquely emobodied in Santa Cruz -- its a cool combination of surf culture and N. Ca psycho iconoclastic hippie. Yeah, you can all quote me.

10. That's a fair characterization of the place I remember.
It was a wonderful, sunny, open place full of creative people and magical mystery spots. It could also be damp, melancholic and almost deserted, particularly during the endless rains of the Winter.

But, every moment was enchanted.

15. OMG, common sense reigns????
OMG, common sense reigns???? I thought the evil weed was so bad, it would lead to... to drinking beer. (Old SNL joke)

What about troglodyte employers who are still channeling Nancy Reagan and have mandatory drug tests? That's a real pet peeve of mine; pot can be detected up to 90 days if you're a heavy smoker, meth lasts about 4 days.
Now, which employee would you rather have on your payroll? If you're on medical buds, are you exempt from the tests?

Yes Mendocino is a great place as well. I always remember Santa Cruz as the place I almost drowned while boogie boarding, which is pathetic but Mendocino is a paradise. The town itself is an artist's community and the coastline is beautiful. Great vegan places to eat and lots of free thinkers. I try to go there at least once a year. It's a little expensive but like traveling to the most enlightened town on Earth.
