Watergate did not start with an indictment of Nixon. Merry Fitzmas.(rant)
Let's look at the charges, shall we?

I. Lewis Libby stands accused of:

1 count of obstruction of justice
2 counts of perjury
2 counts of making false statements.

Yes, most of us at DU wanted to see the Karl Rove frogmarch today. We wanted to see the entire WHIG frogmarch. But Justice must start somewhere.

Fitzgerald has not concluded the investigation.

So now, let us understand the significance of the charges. The Rove spin machine will no doubt dismiss these charges as insignificant in front of the mediawhores, who, even though now they are exposed to light that they cannot hide from, will soon resume the wholesale regurgitation of talking points. Instead, the counts that Libby must answer to, taken together, indicate a cover-up. Let me repeat that.

THE INDICTMENTS AGAINST LIBBY INDICATE A COVER-UP.

It was not the Watergate burglary that caught the Nixon administration and forced Nixon to resign. It was the cover-up.

During Libby's trial, the cover-up will be exposed for all to see, whether Wolf Blitzer wants to admit it or not. The text of the indictment includes the infamous "sixteen words" about the yellowcake in Africa. The investigation does not end with the lies of Libby.

Moreover, grab the  because when Libby faces a possible 30 years of freedom, Bush-style, he's gonna squeal.

The investigation continues. Libby's obstruction and obfuscation led to Justice deferred, but not Justice extinguished. Rove is still under the microscope, and Libby might even reveal more than Fitzgerald himself knows under pressure.

It will still be a long three years, three months, and three weeks, but the eternal flame of Justice, though for many years dimmed by the Bush cabal, is not extinguished, as we saw today.

Merry Fitzmas.

Tonight I shall celebrate. I hold in my hand a ticket to tonight's Cake performance at my university, bought not a half-hour ago.

Merry Fitzmas.:bounce:

2. The charges against Libby are consistent with a cover-up
but they don't indicate whether he was covering for himself or the rest of the gang.

Bush's and Cheney's supportive good byes are consistent with a cover up of the rest of the gang. A firing would have been consistent with his covering for himself.

22. I don't think the Rove spin machine will STFU
It will spin, spin, spin worse than Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma combined.

However, the spin will likely be drowned out in due time.

11. Hammer, meet nail
YOu got it exactly right. Chimpco has already woven their own nooses, just the way Nixon's crew did. It's putting together the pieces and fitting those nooses that takes time. They will all hang together in the long run. BFEE will go down.

13. And Operation Mockingbird was eventually exposed
in the '70s by a media that cared about the truth more than their next paycheck or access to sources.

Operation Mockingbird

Op Mockingbird made the whole war possible in the first place.

14. Thank you for that information
While I am aware that the US undertook domestic propaganda operations during the Cold War, I was unaware of the extent of such operations.

19. The mushroom treatment. The media wants it that way.
Go to that site and check out Ben Bradlee's background in intell and friendship with Richard Helms. Woodward's intell background is well known (read Secret Agenda by Jim Hougan). When intell knows the country's being tanked they will stage a 'palace coup' by the praetorian guard so to speak.

In this case they're running a little late for the empire's own good.

15. YOU are so RIGHT!!
Libby's going to have to defend himself. In the course of doing so, many things will be revealed. THE TRIAL MUST BE PUBLIC! THE LAW REQUIRES THAT THE TRIAL BE PUBLIC!

The ONLY WAY there would be no trial would be if Libby pled guilty to everything Fitzgerald demanded he plead guilty to. Libby wouldn't want to do that. Even if Libby agrees to plead guilty to one charge, if that doesn't satisfy Fitzgerald, it ain't gonna happen.

There's sure to be a trial. A PUBLIC trial. With reporters (and bloggers) scrambling to report each and every detail--just as they have done in the weeks leading up to this.

It's gonna be great!!

And if there get to be more democrats in the congress, and ESPECIALLY if there gets to be a democratic majority in either or both houses, it's gonna be WATERGATE ON STEROIDS!!! VOTE DEMOCRAT!!!

16. Do you think the media will actually cover it like the OJ trial?
Will they broadcast the court proceedings live?

Or will it simply be the seventh story on the evening news?

The media may try to go back to regurgitating talking points, but now the public knows that someone important is in deep $hit. The media's desire to $uck up will eventually be outweighed by the media's desire for glitzy ratings and sensationalism.

When that happens, the bu$h administration will implode. It might have happened today, but it is too early to tell.

Even if the media doesn't reach that point for a long time, the public can now smell the stench emanating from the general direction of the White House, and that is a very important step.

25. I missed it
At the time the thread was started, I was eating lunch and doing homework for German class. This occurred in the Student Union Building, where I do not have access to a computer.

I did not return to DU until on or about 4:50 CST.

In any event, this thread adds to what was said on the other. Moreover, before I left to eat lunch and do homework for German class, I started a similar thread, but it sunk like a rock.

These statements are the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God. I am perfectly willing to make these statements under oath in a court of law.;)

26. Continuing my defense against the false charge of posting a dupe,
I originally stated that the five counts with which Libby was charged constituted a cover-up here at or about 12:34 p.m. CST on 28 October 2005.

The OP of the thread you posted was at or about 2:31 p.m. of the same. You posted this thread about the time I left DU.

I beat you on the cover-up charge by about two hours. I was not around DU when you posted the Nixon connection, but thought of it independently while I was eating my lunch in the Student Union Building, when I could not post for another two hours. We thought of it independently.

When I returned to DU, I found my original thread had died, so I decided to recycle it, adding my newfound commentary.

So you give me credit for the "perjury+obstruction+making false statements=cover-up" meme, and I'll give you credit for the Watergate comparison. Do we have a deal?:)
