People shouldn't delude themselves
Edited on Fri Oct-28-05 05:20 PM by brentspeak
Scooter Libby's indictment looks to be the alpha and the omega of this whole Fitzgerald investigation.
........................................................................
Mr. Fitzgerald, this began as a leak investigation but no one is charged with any leaking. Is your investigation finished? Is this another leak investigation that doesn't lead to a charge of leaking?

FITZGERALD: Let me answer the two questions you asked in one.

OK, is the investigation finished? It's not over, but I'll tell you this: Very rarely do you bring a charge in a case that's going to be tried and would you ever end a grand jury investigation.

I can tell you, the substantial bulk of the work in this investigation is concluded.

This grand jury's term has expired by statute; it could not be extended. But it's in ordinary course to keep a grand jury open to consider other matters, and that's what we will be doing

.............................................................................
At this point, it doesn't seem right to try to string along other DUers into believing that Rove and his gang are going down, when there's absolutely no indication that might happen.

1. We will have to see how Libby handles his indictments. He could
turn on others by pleaing. The roots turn together..

2. I don't know, look at this one:

QUESTION: What can you say about what you're still working on then?

FITZGERALD: I can't. I don't mean that fliply, but the grand jury doesn't give an announcement about what they're doing, what they're looking at, unless they charge an indictment.FITZGERALD: I can tell you that no one wants this thing to be over as quickly as I do, as quickly as Mr. Eckenrode does. I'd like to wake up in my bed in Chicago, he'd like to wake up in his bed in Philadelphia, and we recognize that we want to get this thing done.

I will not end the investigation until I can look anyone in the eye and tell them that we have carried out our responsibility sufficiently to be sure that we've done what we could to make intelligent decisions about when to end the investigation. We hope to do that as soon as possible. I just hope that people will take a deep breath and just allow us to continue to do what we have to do.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think he is purposefully being vague. He keeps his info tight, he doesn't mess around. I think it could go other way...
I just hope that people will take a deep breath and just allow us to continue to do what we have to do.
3. Pay attention to what he is actually saying....
I believe that he is referring to bringing any other charges in THIS indictment... i.e., the case revolving around Scooter's conduct. Obviously then it makes sense that the investigation regarding Scooter would be basically complete. I don't think he's saying that there is not an ongoing investigation into OTHER conduct by other parties.
6. or to put it another way -- No More Charges Against Libby
Libby has been charged with what he is going to be charged w. But that doesnt mean that there won't be charges against "OFFICIAL A" for example. Or against anybody Libby might finger.
4. The only delusion....
...is to assume you know ANYTHING about how Fitzgerald plans to wrap up his investigation. If watching his press conference today didn't show us all that the man is impeccably cautious, then you weren't paying attention. No inferences can be made from anything he said, and that was quite intentional on his part.
Libby is likely the extent of it. So best to focus on his motive for lying.
7. Fitz said repeatedly that he cannot talk about the grand jury
beyond today's indictment.
He is simply saying no more charges against Libby.
He also says "it's not over"
He also says that the bulk of the work is done. That does not mean that there won't be more charges against someone who is not Libby.
Fitz was cautious and cagey. He was there to talk about Libby's indictment, and not allowed to talk about anything else.
9. it's hard to read into what he's saying
Fitzgerald is really good at that.
That quote is hard to interpret. It may mean what you think it is, it may not.
This quote seems to be at odds with the other quote:
<snip>
I will not end the investigation until I can look anyone in the eye and tell them that we have carried out our responsibility sufficiently to be sure that we've done what we could to make intelligent decisions about when to end the investigation. We hope to do that as soon as possible. I just hope that people will take a deep breath and just allow us to continue to do what we have to do.
<snip>
Bottom line: Fitzgerald deliberately made it difficult for anyone to determine his future intentions by not revealing anything. It's hard to infer anything from the press conference.
