Could 'Official A' Be Bush?

WA'Official A' stands out in indictment

SHINGTON -- In a sign of the trouble lingering for the Bush administration, the indictment handed up Friday in the CIA leak probe refers to someone at the White House known as "Official A."

The unidentified official could become a courtroom witness against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who left his job as vice presidential aide shortly after his indictment on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements and perjury.

Several other unnamed officials mentioned in the indictment were identified Friday afternoon by Justice Department officials.

But not "Official A."

The mysterious official is identified in the indictment only as "a senior official in the White House."

1. Very interesting !
Since all the other officials were named, why did he feel the need to call one "Official A"? Why did he not mention him by name? It is possible.

2. Even the article says it is ROVE per their sources
They do not want to put his name in the indictment, because Official A can be construed as having involvement (and you don't accuse, publicly anyway, without indicting):

Friday's indictment says "Official A" is a "senior official in the White House who advised Libby on July 10 or 11 of 2003" about a chat with Novak about his upcoming column in which Plame would be identified as a CIA employee.

Late Friday, three people close to the investigation, each asking to remain unidentified because of grand jury secrecy, identified Rove as Official A.

3. All unidentified sources have so far been traced to the Bush camp
Not Fitzgerald's office. What else would Bush's camp say? Rove isn't going to be around much longer. The White Hose spokesman would not even admit Rove was still on the payroll at the WH Friday evening.

6. Not all--some sources are rumored to be GRAND JURY associates
That means someone in the room when the GJ met--if not GJ members, then the baliff or court stenographer, or even the Judge or Special Prosecutor. The lawyers are not allowed in, so if it is them talking out of school, they aren't doing it from direct knowledge. And given how the press has been screwed by the WH, I doubt they are taking the word of any administration types, or legal eagles for the indicted, or soon-to-be indicted, as Gospel anymore. This had to be confirmed either by someone on the SP staff or within the GJ room.

Every news outlet, from TIME to Newsweek to NYT to LA TIMES to the WAPO and the Moonie Times, are all saying that when the Special Prosecutor said "Official A" he was talking about Rove.

That does not, of course, preclude the possibility that there is an Official B, an Official C, or an Official D...

...Three people close to the investigation, all asking anonymity because of grand jury secrecy, identified Karl Rove as "Official A." The White House deputy chief of staff, who also talked with Novak about Plame, has acknowledged talking to reporters about Plame....

"Official A is either Rove or Billy the Kid," Flannery said. "The prosecutor has decided that he can't close the loop on Rove quite yet."
