:wow: No shit! Those words just slithered out of that slimeball's mouth. Amazing. At that point, Juan should've decked him or at least called him out for such deplorable, racially charged rhetoric.

Oh, man that's bad. I thought Juan might have been highly animated or using some extreme gestures that might have give *some* possible contextual justification for Hume's remark, but there is NOTHING that about what Williams was saying OR his demeanor that ANYONE would think called for a smack down at all! Much less one so ignorantly chosen.

That is Very. Bad.

FWIW, I think it's probably best he didn't act out of anger. A more dignified response (such as McNabb gave Rushbot) will serve him better.

I'll admit the reaction to Katrina shocked the hell out of me, but I'm very aware that things have been going backward ever since that idiot Raygun took office.

I'm old enough to remember a time when we all thought things were getting better and such virulent racism was limited to a few, truly deranged individuals. That's what I was talking about.

Perhaps he meant that Juan needed to be 'cooled down' for getting hot over an issue.

Not every questionable phrase is a racial epithet. I would want to know what Williams thought of it.

If you think about it, one can construe nearly any derisive phrase as racist.

Why didn't he say, " Cool Down Black Boy" would that have been better?

No, his racism came out loud and clear.

Lesson In African American Hot Buttons
these are just a few that should be given to Liberals and others of Good Will...

BOY when referring to someone over the age of 11, YOU people, My maid is cute like you, HOSE when telling an African America to think the way that you think, DOGS and Civil Rights in the same sentence, KKK,Bull Connor,GIRL-when referring to any minority over the age of 11,Confederate flag,George W Bush is a great President...he really cares about YOU people,Condi Rice was born in Alabama, she loves YOU People, Why don't YOU PEOPLE get over New Orleans-why didn't you evacuate when WE told you to?

Trust me, Hume's Comments will be met with the same disgust as Robert Bennett's. They will be put in the same bag marked RACIST COMMENTS for 2005.

73. Agreed.
I am far more prone to believe that it was indeed intentional.

A man whose career is made on words should not be so foolish.
But I do try to see the possibility that it is not meant the way that others might interpret it.

I we all stopped to consider whether our words might be construed differently than we intended, the world would be a very quiet place.

Years ago I was with a friend and his father and I was talking about a girl I knew who was crazy. I said, "She's just the kind of freak who would come after me with a knife."
My friends' father went stone cold, and for the rest of the weekend he was incredibly rude to both his son and myself.

I did not find out until later that my friends' father actually did psychotically attack a family member with a knife.

If we all have to guard our speech against offending all possible sensitivities, we will never speak at all.

123. Being an anglo, I missed the reference at first, too. But JEEEZ! Utterly
TASTELESS! Because I'm certainly old enough to remember the storm troopers in the Deep South who turned fire hoses and attack dogs and other such lovely stuff on black protestors in civil rights marches and other forms of activism (which, as I recall, were all peaceful. Just lots and lots of people present).

It would have been JUST as easy for hume to tell Juan Williams to chill, or take a deep breath, or cool down, or not get all worked up. This reference was at best thoughtless and careless and stupid (as to the connotation and mental pictures it evoked in the minds and memories of some viewers - and undoubtedly NOT just here on DU) and at worst, horridly, callously racist.

167. When Rosa Parks is lying in state in the Rotunda
any reference to hosing someone down serves only to wave the flag of racism. Even a pseudo-journalist such as Hume has be held to a minimum standard.

With the recent events of Sec'y Rice's visit to Ala and the attention brought by Ms. Parks' passing, it is no exaggeration to see overt racism in such remarks. Another example of the waste of electromagnetic energy that is Faux News.

whether the Civil Rights allusion was meant consciously or not. (and agree with whoever said that even if it wasn't consciously intended it provides a window into the way his mind works. why would that even come into your head?)

You know what else--Hume might bitch about "P.C." (god, so tired of that phrase) if called on it, but you know what? He, like his fellow Fox pundits, is a rude fuck (yes, Miss Manners told me that "rude fuck" is a perfectly acceptable expression in this instance. also "bullying asshole"). You shouldn't talk to your guests that way, period. And then they (the so-called conservatives--what *are* they conserving, anyway, besides their own egos?) have the nerve to whine about "the culture"--honey, the only culture you know is at the bottom of a yogurt container.

Part of me wishes that just once, someone would stand up to O'Reilly or one of those other jerks in a really dignified but angry way, just put the MANNERS on them.

it would help if whoever it was was also about seven feet tall and talked like James Earle Jones doing Shakespeare. but really a plain old "What gives you the right to talk to me that way? Who do you think you are?" would be a great start.

Hume knows the power of words, he gets paid everyday to speak them.

IMO, when bullies get backed into a wall they show their really true colors.

That is what is happening.

In their private conversations they are blaming my people for all of their Frat Boys problems...Katrina,Medicare, the economy and on and on.

So, their wicked lips slip when they are in public.

I am emailing them right away and would urge everyone else to do this...

On the day that we are burying Rosa Parks, this Hume says this to an " African American" in appearance.

Help me if I'm wrong, didn't Juan Williams turn into a Puppet for Bush or am I mixing him up?
and what did Juan Williams say to him back?

Juan has to have his point ready in advance for the measly opening they give him...so those things were probably occupying his mind when Hume unleased.

The proper response would have been to say...Do you think the German Shepards are needed as well, is that how you'd like me to be put in my place?...

That would have really put Hume on the ropes, and it would have dredged up the spat they had about the Bennett comment.

Had he replied that way , it would have put a spotlight on Hume that he would have no way to evade.

but I'd place $ that Faux sidelined Juan after the Bennett thing and made him be less confrontational under fire.

When someone says or does something so overt, I believe the most common reaction is disbelief, almost a wish to believe it hadn't actually been said or done. But, once the initial ahock wears off, Williams should rip Hume a new asshole in no uncertain terms. As all of us should be doing.

And as for the white folks who needed the racial component of that remark explained to you in this thread, please be more sensitive to the history of the civil rights movement.

30. Infamous fire-hose/dog photos from May 1963 in Birmingham Alabama
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 11:28 AM by AirAmFan

"On April 20 (1963), King and Shuttlesworth were released from prison, and the marchers were ready to begin. James Bevel was the primary organizer for SCLC. He orchestrated a plan to use high school children to initiate the march. The plan was to use 13 to 18 year old kids to fill up the city's prisons. With the media there, this would surely embarrass city officials. On May 2, the march begin. Less than a block away, Bull Connor was waiting for them. As soon as they turn the corner, he ordered the arrest of all of the students. Over nine hundred children were jailed ranging from the age of 6 to 18. Connor was furious and many of his officers were embarrassed. The following day, Connor called out the water cannons and the dogs. As marchers came parading down the streets, the police attacked. First came the water cannons, then the Billy clubs, and lastly the dogs. America watched in horror as school age children were being savagely beaten. The whole nation was outraged. The following day, things were different. As the marchers came down the street, Conner again ordered his men to attack. Instead, firemen refused to turn on the hoses and many of the police would not participate in the arrests. Several hundred protesters were still arrested that day."

40. He is VERY Republican.
He hosted Talk of the Nation on NPR. His first show that I ever heard was celebration of Bill O'Reilly, and the show was a total lie. He presented O'Reilly as a working class hero. Every show I caught after that was conservative propaganda. They eventually got rid of him and I suspect that it was because he was laying on the conservative propaganda a little too thickly and too many NPR listeners were wise to it.

Fox would not have on their program someone they couldn't count on being Right Wing. He plays a role on that show -- he's supposed to look like the liberal because he is black. But listen closely to what he says. None of it is very critical of Republicans.

White house in trouble, smear campaign on Wilson - these are not RW talking points and that's why Hume insulted him.
i don't watch FAUX so I can't commenon Williams rle there. On NPR Williams was fairly centrist in my opinion. NPR has years of audio archives online - judge for yourself. Here's a May 2000 Bush Gore background that Williams hosted:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1074852

I can't find a show dedicated to O'rielly that Juan Williams could have hosted. Perhaps you remember this show hosted by Neal Conan:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1147480

Talk of the Nation, July 30, 2002 ·
Guest:

Bill O'Reilly
* Host, Fox News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor
* Host, The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly
* Author, The O'Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life (Broadway Books 2000) and The No Spin Zone: Confrotiations with the Powerful and Famous in America (Broadway Books 2001)

Bill O'Reilly drives some people crazy, others adore him. Either way, he's hard to ignore. He hosts the top rated cable news show, and has two best selling books. The self-described, "real cocky bastard" -- Bill O'Reilly is our guest this hour on Talk of the Nation, from NPR News.

126. I don't think NPR should be promoting people who have no problem
getting the media attention O'Reilly gets. Let Entertainment Tonight participate in the plugging of the mega-stars. NPR is a public station and should be dealing with issues and personalities who don't have an easy time getting broad coverage for their ideas and arguments.

I'm trying to track the show down. It was before January 18, 2002.

I know this because I found this letter in the Buzzflash archives:

BuzzFlash:

Bill O'Reilly has been on a major NPR show -- the Juan Williams incarnation of Talk of the Nation. I listen to NPR a lot when I'm putting in my miles outdoors (sound mind in a sound body) and heard this pompous, sneering windbag promoting his book (and I missed Ray Suarez more than ever).

O'Reilly is cheesed because Diane Rehm won't have him on. She is a saint for many reasons, one of them being that she puts up with the fellow from the Weekly Standard quite regularly and another because she doesn't let her guests or caller yammer on rudely. (She had to chastise Pat Buchanan when he was on her show.) How like Bill to castigate an entire organization because he is upset with element of it. Bullies are like that.

Pat Kiewicz

Here's some of Media Matters recent commentary on Juan Williams:

http://mediamatters.org/archives/search.html?string=juan+williams&media=all&date_start=2004-04-19&date_end=2005-10-27&topic=&topic=&topic=NPR&go=Search

which turned up this:

Has NPR's Juan Williams been spending too much time with FOX's Brit Hume?

Click Play to listen to this audio clip
Problems? Download this clip here

National Public Radio senior correspondent and FOX News Channel contributor Juan Williams joined fellow FOX News Sunday panelist Brit Hume in adopting the Bush-Cheney '04 campaign's misrepresentation of Senator John Kerry's statement about a "global test." On October 5, Williams falsely reported on NPR that during the first presidential debate, Kerry "talked about getting global consent for America to take preemptive action."

http://mediamatters.org/items/200410060007

And here's something else I found:

Less frequent Special Report panelists include conservative Washington Times reporter Bill Sammon, centrist Fortune writer Jeff Birnbaum and NPR host Juan Williams. Williams, the only guest who could plausibly claim to be a liberal, was so outraged over attacks on his friend Clarence Thomas that he declared that "liberals have become monsters" (Washington Post, 10/10/91), denouncing the "so-called champions of fairness: liberal politicians, unions, civil rights groups and women's organizations." Indeed, Fox's crew of "liberal" pundits seems almost calculated to be either ineffective left-of-center advocates or conciliatory moderates. Ironically, perhaps the o nly Fox commentator who consistently presents a strong progressive perspective--that is, critical of corporate power and militarism, and sympathetic to progressive social movements--is FAIR founder Jeff Cohen, a weekly panelist o n the weekend media show Fox News Watch.

But it isn't as if that's the ony thing Williams has ever said on air, or the only place he pops up on mediamatters. I just don't beleive he deserves a write off.

...
From later in the same Fox News Sunday broadcast, during a panel segment with FOX News contributors Mara Liasson and Juan Williams of National Public Radio and Bill Kristol of The Weekly Standard:

HUME: And the third failure was the -- the other failure, I should say, the second was -- you see the president's approval rating there has been hammered by all of this and I suspect local officials will as well -- but was the failure to give relief supplies to those who couldn't or didn't or wouldn't get out of the city. And there, the governor bears clearly the responsibility, would not let the two agencies who were prime movers and partners of FEMA, the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, both mentioned in the law creating FEMA as an integral part of what FEMA does, into the city.

<...>

WILLIAMS: You can try to make lemonade out of this, but these are lemons Brit, and you gotta to recognize that FEMA even failed to recognize the extent of the crisis.

HUME: That's absurd.

WILLIAMS: That's not absurd. Michael Chertoff was on NPR talking to Robert Siegel saying, "Oh I don't think there's a problem at the convention center." He didn't even know about it, and it was on Fox, and he could turn on the cable and watch the problem.

they are absurdly far right. In the real world, Williams is very conservative. (He was a major Clarence Thomas defender.)

There are many good journalists who don't turn up at all in a search on Media Matters. Williams turns up repeatedly.

They're writing the instruction manual in how to embed racism in daily dialog.

They're following Newt Gingrich's recipe he laid out in his seminal 1995 memo "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control"

It's the power of words. Every day FoxNews introduces new words it's OK to say.

Institutionalized racism. One word at a time.

in order to keep their base happy.
They know what they are doing and they keep on doing it.

They probably get big pay raises for doing it.

Hume will probably be nominated for the SC tomorrow.

Soul sister, goclark, would have been across the table with my hand on my hips and my finger would have been thisclose to Britt's slimy face.

By the time I finished with Hume this morning,he would have a real understanding of what I thought of him, his Mama, his Daddy and Fox News.

80. ROTFL but if you know me,you know I'd do it!
I emailed Britt this morning and said that he should be on the look out for a new job because he should be fired!

I let him know the list of people that I have notified. I started with all the leaders of the MMM and ended with Conyers.

I should have told him that I cc'd it to Tookie Williams, Past "President" of the Crips Gang in Los Angeles. Tookie is on Death Row and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Since one of Britt's "buddies" just sentenced him to die, Tookie has nothing to lose.

Huum, can Tookie still make phone calls? I bet he could help Britt to understand what his MEAN words mean to African Americans.

Can't you see Britt's face? He would need "A Hose To Cool Down" and wipe the sweat off after his little phone call from Tookie.

every time i think what he's really doing is trying to undermine Williams creditability, it's like he the audience are sharing an inside joke, something along the lines of "See ladies and gentleman, you can't listen to a word Juan says, he's a left wing nut, but you get that--you are it getters"

Jesus. The crazy thing is, it isn't even like Juan was all worked up, he was very calm in what he said right before that horrible comment. Not that it would have been justified in any way, even if he had been excited about something, but there is NO way to construe it as referring to hosing down 2 dogs fighting or something...no excuse.

I've watched that clip a few times and I have to say I think it was orchestrated.

I think Hume was laying in wait to do it. I also think it did a very nice job of pulling attention to outrage at Hume rather than outrage at the corrupt pigs in the WhiteHouse. Hume was WAAAAAAAAY too calculated with his delivery for this to have been an accident.

Just an opinion.

He was barking the talking points to willing smirking Wallace that there "was no proof" in Wilson's trip to Niger, that the report was "completely inaccurate", that the Libby indictment will be overturned due to lack of solid evidence, etc.

He is so utterly full of shit on so many levels... his "hose you down" comments were probably approved by the Rethuggers beforehand with his probable disagreement that Rosa Parks was anything but an uppity nigger that should have been shot by his fellow Rethugs Of Yesteryear.

180. 100% BOYCOTT FOX NEWS NOW!!
This is the announcement I'd like Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid to put out:

"Thank you for coming to this briefing. House leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate leader Harry Reid, and myself are here to announce a Democratic news boycott against Fox News.

"For years, Fox News has perpetuated the extreme right wing views which most citizens find appalling, and therefore is not a credible source for democrats to engage Americans in the arena of ideas. With the routine slandering and absolute refusal to allow multiple political views to be presented to the American public, we representatives of the Democratic Party have made a pact to refuse to express our views on their network.

"Henceforth, all requests for media participation from our Democratic Party representatives from Fox News or the News Coporation will be denied. Congresspersons, senators, gubernatorial heads, and party officials will of course still engage their views on other networks and through private means.

"If Fox News changegs its format and elimates their bias, we will reconsider our involvement with them at that time. Thank you."

EVERYONE in DU, please get to Howard to instigate this very necessary step.
