Alexander Haig: despicable quote of the day
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 02:09 PM by Julius Civitatus
As pointed by Atrios, despite lying and trying to trash the honor of Wilson, and smearing unsubstantiated rumors, Al Haig tried to make the felony of perjury a minor thing during his interview with Wolf Blitzer:

"Unfortunately a lot of fine young people were gotten for perjury during Watergate."

Just for kicks, replace "perjury" with any other felony, see how it feels.

What a scumbag!

2. He makes it sound like perjury is a parking ticket
Those poor "fine young fellows" involved in Watergate were just taken down by mere perjury, you see. It's not like they did anything wrong, really!

Right? Right?

:puke:

which would you rather have as the accepted moral code of our country?

Sheesh, these people are unbelievable.

7. I don't see it as despicable at all.
Context seems important here.

Haig says that those who were "gotten" during Watergate had only two choices presented to them by the investigators: Point a finger at Nixon, or be charged with perjury.

The way I read his comment is with quotes around the word: "Unfortunately a lot of fine young people were gotten for "perjury" during Watergate." (presumably because they wouldn't finger Nixon.)

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but I don't like it when comments from the left are quoted out-of-context by the right. That has to go both ways.

12. Can you be charged with perjury..
for telling the truth? And is truth-telling and 'fingering' the same thing...presumably? And, who's parade would you be raining on, and why?

16. All I'm doing is listening to his comments in context.
And telling you how I hear it given the context. And you know what? I could be wrong. But I'd be interested in DISCUSSING it instead of just being another ditto-head.

Some people don't seem interested in context when it doesn't suit their purposes.

13. Baloney. If Haig had been on his game at all, OBSTRUCTION would have
been what he meant. If someone went to jail for perjury, it's because he (or she) LIED, not because they wouldn't finger Nixon. Now, if he or she knew something and refused to tell it, that would be obstruction.

If we, as a people, expect others to uphold the rule of law, part of that is expecting people to tell the truth and not commit perjury. Those who do can expect some form of justice or what's the point of the justice system at all?

15. Sounds like a comment for another thread.
This one's about whether his comment was "despicable".

And given the context of his comment, I've explained why I don't see it that way.

17. And I just explained why I disagree with you-It IS despicable for
him to minimize perjury in that fashion plus his use of it isn't even on the mark.

18. He sounded either wacko or has a touch of dementia because he
said it was already known that Plame was CIA and then when Blitzer questioned what he had said he just gave some remark about how he doesn't really know that much about it. Obviously! Why then pray tell does CNN call in someone like this?

I loved it when he declared himself president after Raygun was shot...he has utterly ZERO cred.
