Harry Reid Hits Bush with a One - Two Punch
Harry Reid Hits Bush with a One - Two Punch
October 30, 2005

Harry Reid was firing away at Bush this morning on ABC’s “This Week” and slammed him with a brisk one - two punch. It was a right hook on the Libby indictment and a left hook on the upcoming Supreme Court nomination.

Here’s some highlights of his comments on the Libby indictment, and his call on Bush and Cheney to apologize “the actions of their aides”:

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Sunday that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should apologize for the actions of their aides in the CIA leak case.

Reid also said Bush should pledge not to pardon any aides convicted as a result of the investigation into the disclosure of CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity.

“There has not been an apology to the American people for this obvious problem in the White House,” Reid said. He said Bush and Cheney “should come clean with the American public.”

Reid added, “This has gotten way out of hand, and the American people deserve better than this.”

1. His point about bush pledging not to pardon any aides is great!
That puts it out there front and center for bush to either waffle on, which will look bad, or pledge as asked which won't happen. Way to go Mr. Reid!

4. Yeah, it's a lose-lose situation for Bush...
Pledging not to pardon Libby only makes him more likely to flip on his masters, but not making the pledge makes Bush look corrupt and complicit...

2. Hooray for hard hitting journalism!!
I doubt they will actually apologize, but right now that is besides the point.

3. I'm surprised he didn't mention Conyers letter
My letter campaign to the President demanding that he pledge not to pardon those indicted by Fitzgerald was a huge success in its first 24 hours. We have already received 9,268 submissions, nearly reaching our goal of 10,000 letters. This terrific response has been a testament to the effectiveness of netroots advocacy. If you haven't yet, please sign the letter.

We are apparently one day closer to indictments from the grand jury. Richard Sale has suggested here that indictments may come on Friday and that Fitzgerald is seeking to empanel a new grand jury. Perhaps this should not come as a great surprise given the sudden revelation in Monday's New York Times that Libby learned about Plame from Cheney. There may be more to this than we had previously thought.

6. He was also the only one on the shows that I saw that told about lies to
invasion. For some reason, no one else seems interested in that. Why is there not total outrage over this? How many more have to die for these lies? Plus, he also said the invasion is now costing $2 billion a week! Are these people nut! And we have the most soldiers over there since the invasion. But everything is going well.

7. Maybe because
Fitzgerald tried to downplay the connection.
