60 minutes on now!
In the intro, a lady says "we're being undermined by people in our very own government."

Sounds like this will be a good one!

3. What would motivate such a betrayal?
The special prosecutor in the investigation did not answer this question.

CBS wanted to know what happens when an agent for the CIA is exposed.

6. Background on Val
Edited on Sun Oct-30-05 07:20 PM by Tatiana
All the class went just by the initial of their last name. She was known as Val P.

Marcinkowski took the outing personally. He went public and blamed the WH. We held a particular trust for 18 years. If he has to keep those secrets, the WH should be held to the same standard.

Valerie recieved advanced degrees in London and Belgium.

On edit: Marcinkowski attended class at the CIA training facility in VA known as "the farm" with Valerie.

9. Wow
I'm glad Fitzgerald made it clear that the outing of her was a big deal with our national security and it did harm all of us and not just them. He debunked all the rightwing talking points. And yes hopefully someone will have this so I can see it. I forgot all about it and I don't like to watch something after it began because I'm so lost.

8. Outing an agent.
Val was not attached to a US Embassy as a NOC. She would have had no protection if she was caught spying. Hugh Redmon was caught spying and died in a Chinese prison. He was likely a NOC. To this day, the CIA denies he was a spy.

part of any NOC.

13. More...
Valerie Plame was working on important national security issues. She was an expert on WMD. These people are hard to find. She investigated networks, financial trails.

Congressman Holt, member of the House Intelligence Committee, says people who came into contact with Valerie may be in danger. ("Mitigating the damage.") Says there hasn't been a formal assessment of the damage.

47. I Don't watch 60 Min utes much any more
By the time they deem a story worthy of broadcast, I've known about it for months or years thanks to DU and the Internets.
60 Minutes is a show for a large number of non-news junkies.
They may catch a few minutes of some morning infotainment and probably
watch the evening news with dinner and maybe a local paper, but don't dig much below the surface. They DO watch 60 Minutes. That show has been on forever. It's a Sunday evening ritual. Middle America trusts it.
Middle America just got a major clue.

15. Joe Wilson
Told agency sale of uranium was unlikely. Wilson accused administration of lying to make case for war.

"It was the WH that decided to go after me and the tactic they used was to go after my wife. It was a shot across the bow to others, you do what Joe Wilson did to us and we'll come after you," according to Wilson.

Wilson - She felt like she'd been hit in the stomach. She recovered quickly, she became matter-of-fact afterwards. Making sure her assets were protected. Val realized her career was over. She wondered for what.

Wilson thinks Novak's actions were abominable. Val has been silent. The CIA still won't comment. Wilson can't comment other than to say there have been specific threats to them.

Val still reports to work everyday at CIA Headquarters. She can't remain in the clandestine service of the CIA, however. It's a very uncomfortable spot.

23. They were very credible.
I also think the segment shed light on why the CIA pushed for this investigation and wouldn't let the Bush administration get away with Ashcroft whitewashing things.

Valerie seems to be WELL-RESPECTED by all of her co-workers and friends.

26. I thought that also.....
And another thing that really came across is how much careful, hard work goes into the establishment of a cover, only to have those asswipes come along and destroy it. And it HAS to have affected others...it is so carefully crafted over time, how could it not?

30. After watching 60 minutes
and listening to those former CIA agents and understand just how dangerous this was for Valeria and other agents still in the field I became more convinced that Congressional hearing must be held and bring every single Bushite responsible to justice. This is much more serious than Iran Contra If the Republicans in Congress block the hearing than they should be held accountable also.

Great reporting--I'd forgotten completely about the shadow company. When they mentioned it, I immediately thought "What if other agents were using that?" Of course the story answered that of course there could have been others ... and I got extremely angry all over again, haha
