My husband is running for mayor of our hometown -- election today |
|
Mods, if you need to move this to the Lounge, I'll understand. My husband is running for mayor of our hometown, and obviously, the election is today. To say I'm nervous is an understatement.
His is the only contested race in our entire valley. The guy he's running against switched to the Republican Party two years ago to be more "viable," and is not the best for our small town.
Please think good thoughts for him, and I'll let everyone know the outcome, most likely tomorrow morning!

Good luck! I know how you feel...my hubbie ran for Congress once. I was such a wreck when he gave his first speech, but then he was absolutely mobbed when he came off stage, so that was nice. (We lost, though.) It feels good to have done it, even if you don't win, once you get over the disappointment.

18. Good luck Julie's husband! |
|
Julie, it's always nervewracking when a family member is running for office. Stress takes its toll whether the news is good or bad.
Take care of yourself today and try to carve out some time for you and your husband alone (and children if you have any) even if it's just 20 minutes away from election news and talk. Hopefully you have a circle of friends/advisors who can carve out that time for you and shield your family from as much stress as possible. (That hour or so right after the polls close seems to be the worst for stress, then those returns start coming in.)
Then take a deep breath and get back out there!
I'll keep you in my thoughts today and however it turns out, remember that you've done your best, in fact you've done more than most people.

59. Here's the weird part: We're not sure |
|
There's supposedly 3000 voters in town; this is an off-year election, so I was thinking that the turnout would not be heavy. They haven't even posted counts from the polls yet, so I'm not sure what's going on.
I'm hoping things get a lot closer with the next reporting; we'll have to wait and see!

65. The good news and the bad news |
|
It took an unbelievable amount of time for King County Elections to upload their poll totals; we went to bed last night before we knew what happened.
The good news: This has been a good experience for everyone at our house; I think DH learned a lot about the issues and got to meet a lot of truly great people. (One has to doorbell every house in our hometown when running for office.)
The bad news: We lost. We not only lost, we got killed. It's pretty early here, so I haven't quite had a lot of time to digest how I feel about this. We heard from SO many people how absolutely unhappy they were with what was going on in the town and at City Hall, but it didn't translate into votes.
Thank you again, everyone, for your encouragement and good thoughts. I know it meant a lot to him, and even more to me.

Even in losing, he's let them know that they're being watched.. And everyone that you spoke to knows that there is now some competition, and that there's hope for the future on the issues that touch them. Rally those who supported you before the election, and let them know that the fight goes on.

My town on Vancouver Island is going to the polls next week. I am sorry to say that nobody is stepping forward to challenge our big-business mayor -- I really admire your husband for doing that in your town. (It wouldn't be a democracy without people like him.)
I was talking to someone else I know, who is already on the school board and has tried (without success) in 3 provincial and 1 federal election so far. (The time that hurt worst was when the BC New Dems got crushed, 2 to 77, back in 2001.) She says that it's actually kind of freakish when people like "the Terminator" run for public office and get in on the first try, because they just haven't got the patience and experience that one learns from campaigning, losing, and trying again. Yeah, it does build character -- though in the meantime it is NOT fun! And kudos to your husband, and you, and the campaign team.
The New Dems came back this year, though it took years of work. Thanks to people like you!
