THE WORST SPEECH OF BUSH'S PRESIDENCY.
Attack Mode
by David Kusnet Only at TNR Online | Post date 11.11.05

For speechwriters drafting a presidential address for a patriotic holiday such as Independence Day, Memorial Day, or Veterans Day, there are three rules: Don't be wordy; don't be wonky; and, most important, don't be partisan. In his Veterans Day remarks today at the Tobyhanna Army Depot near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, President Bush and his staff broke all three rules, producing a strident speech that went on for almost 50 minutes, included a lengthy comparison of "Islamic radicalism" and "the ideology of communism," and concluded by attacking "some Democrats," while taking an implicit shot at "my opponent during the last election." It may have been the worst speech of his presidency....

15. I really wish DUers would stop calling him "President"....
...he was NEVER legally elected to that position.

At best, and worst, he is petty, malicious, power-hungry dictator who seized power in December 2000.

29. Katrina raised the bar to "President"
And it's clear he couldn't get over it. By calling him "President" and expecting him to act like one, it's now clear that he isn't anywhere near.

I get what you're saying, but he's gotten away with his lowering the bar bullshit for too long.

30. Great reply
I agree, why should we?

I'm even starting to wonder if we should aproperate his name with a star "*" I am glad it caught on - I do dislike typing out his name, but it almost looks like a cheery snowflake or a gold star given to a good student. I call for the use of the dollar sign "$" to be used instead. As in "I hope $ resigns today!"

10. Someone has Bush's ear now, and it ain't Rove or Cheney
Maybe Bush is acting as his own counsel now.

That speech was a mess. The response was polite, tepid, and toruringly manufactured.

11. This says alot given that it's coming from TNR.
TNR prides itself as representing the "sane" wing of the progressive movement (their claim, not mine). They would not speak out in such an extreme way unless it was REALLY necessary.

23. Washington Post: Newsview: Bush Revisits Campaign Playbook
<snip>WASHINGTON -- President Bush seems to be turning the clock back to Election Day 2004, parrying with ex-rival John Kerry and harshly questioning his critics' commitment to U.S. troops.

You can't blame him for being nostalgic for better political times, when most Americans felt he was a strong, honest leader and gave him the benefit of the doubt on Iraq.

That's certainly not the sentiment these days. With his approval ratings plunging, even some Republican leaders are showing signs of abandoning Bush's listing ship.

"Mistakes were made," Republican Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania said Friday of the war effort.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Republicans like Santorum who are in tough re-election battles are starting to treat Bush like a toxic substance.

In a speech to veterans at the Union League in Philadelphia, Santorum criticized how the war has been presented to Americans, by the White House as well as by the media.

He said Bush made a mistake by calling it a "war on terror," which Santorum equated with calling World War II a "war on Blitzkrieg."

I'm not a compasionate conservative so I think it's quite appropriate to help Bush out and throw him a gifted wrapped anvil. And a super delux anchor, lead weights, the kitchen sink(a kohler iron delux), a 20lb bag of pennies, and just for shits and giggles cement shoes(with lead reebar)

Remember, every time we think and his cronies just absolutely, positively CAN'T go any lower, he manages to dig even DEEPER into his Magical Mystical Barrel of Slime. It's an infinite resource for him.
