I think it would look pretty similar to the electoral map last year.

West coast would be pretty safe, as would the Northeast. The South, Mountain West and Great Plaines would be screwed.

The Midwest where I am would probably be the biggest tossup. I think most states here would put further restrictions on abortion but not ban it altogether. Illinois would probably have no restrictions.

1. You are assuming that the supreme court will NOT declare a fetus a person,
with full constitutional rights.

You think it can't happen?

Watch it happen.

5. exactly. who says states wil be able to allow it at all?
the conservatives on the court believe in "states rights" only when it suits them. As examples, consider the states that have tried to make assisted suicide or medical marijuana legal.

13. Watch the GOP go down in Flames VERY NEXT ELECTION.
Abortion chouce for adults is incredibly popular and those who dont want it in their state want it in nearby states "just in case."

16. If they do declare that a fetus has rights...
...every pregnant woman will have to register with and be monitored by the Federal Government. Miscarriages will be investigated as possible homicides.

NH, VA, WV, OH, IN, KY, TN, AL, MS, GA, FL, NC, SC, LA, AR, TX, MO, NE, OK, IA, ND, SD, MT, UT, ID, CO, NM, AZ, AK, WY

The rest wouldn't. 30 states would, 20 wouldn't.

6. I'm not sure about all those, particularly some of the mountain states
I'm not convinced WY (where the conservative trends libertarian) would outlaw it, ditto Montana. Colorado has an increasing religious presences, but I'm still not sure they would outlaw abortion. (Utah and Idaho, on the other hand would get rid of it in a hurry.)

25. Utah and Idaho would be my two
I think many others would put more restrictions onto it, but outright banning, I'd guess there would be two.

3. ohio would outlaw it....then I would leave the state...most of
people with brains already have left. I did, but came back for family reasons. I don't recognize the state I grew up in....bunch of bible thumping fascists and everyone else is full of fear. Ohio is gone...it's really North Texas now.

22. Didn't mean to insult all the Texans...it's just that
Ohio seems to be some little neocon 'experiment.' With voting, with bible thumping, with fascism...it's strange. It is total one-party rule here....totally corrupt...they destroyed the industrial base. It's as if we were invaded by or overcome by some greedy force.

Maybe I should call Ohio 'the new West Virginia...' or just East Virginia. And I don't mean that to be insulting either...it's just that Ohio has fallen so badly...in education, jobs, schools....all young people leave and I don't blame them. I hope we can stop the hemorraging of $ and brains.

I love Molly Ivins...she's from Texas!

4. Recent polls say "pro lifers" outnumber "pro choicers" in only 13 states.
These would be the ones most likely to implement restrictions, at least.

11. The problem with that is...
... that pro-lifers are one issue voters who turn out in large numbers for that one issue.

Most pro-choicers aren't as devoted to the cause. Abortion will probably never come into play for most of them so they don't fight zealously for it.

If abortion rights were to be put to a vote tomorrow they would go down in a landslide because only the pro-life side is fiercely motivated.

Watch what happens if (heaven forbid) the supremes fuck with abortion rights. After over 30 years of reproductive liberty AND more gender equality...no going back. I imagine there's not much historical evidence for public support of such "turn back the clock" measures. Once freedom is secured, no guvment's gonna have an easy time snatching it away!

12. here is the breakdown based on the study referenced above:
In only 20 states, women’s right to choose abortion appears secure because of established
strong state constitutional or statutory protections or a friendly legislative environment.
These states are: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York,
Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
In the remaining 9 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the District of
Columbia, protection is uncertain. In some of these states, legislative factors are
uncertain but warrant concern. In others, there is some indication that the right to choose
abortion could be protected under the state constitution, but the right is by no means
secure. These states are: Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, New
Hampshire, and Pennsylvania.

20. The underlying cause of much of this is that Roe was a poorly
written decision. Most of the lawyers I know, including several who practice at the Supreme Court consider Roe of the weakest and most poorly worded every handed down. The real answer always has been legislation. In states where there has been follow up legislation, a woman's right to choose is fundamentally protected (as it should be).

That is one BACKWARDS state, legislativly speaking.

I believe is honky-dory to marry off your 14 year old daughter to her second cousin there. No, I'm not making that up.

26. It will never be overturned because it is irrelavant.
The SCOTUS decision on Casey took care of that. The state of Mississippi now only has one abortion clinic in the entire state. Missouri - just 2. Many poor women in these states do not have the resources to travel to another state. It's tantamount to forced pregnancy imo. Oh and the kicker - these rightie states do not really endorse the idea of public monies used for making birth control accessible either.

Just visit this site for a real eye opener...

turned even though they know damn well it never will be...it's a great way for them to collect campaign funds from the wingnuts. Stupid fools. Wait till one of their daughters comes home preggers in Mississippi and finds out what's really going on.
