This is a lucky woman. Her son came home from Iraq, broken but whole. She posts to DU frequently, and I read about a month and a half ago when she got a call that sent her to Europe to get her wounded son.

You see many handsome men in face-on photos, who have all died. This is Ben, a very lucky man who hasn't. He was lucky. She was lucky. Think of these reunions across the world, and across the country, and how many smiling mothers won't get the chance to stand over their wounded son with a smile on their face, grateful to hold hospital robes draped over shoulders vs. nothing at all.

This boy could be like 2065 others... who never got this chance.


I hope it's okay for me to send this to people, with that beautiful picture, in hopes that it might wake some people up.

But he is a fighting Irish/Polish bloke and will be up and about soon. My heart breaks for all the kids on 5E that did not have an advocate for them. Man was I a pain in the ass for the staff...I would not let them ignore or overlook a kid that did not have an advocate. I was in their faces for the guys that did not have a loved one around.

Ben told me he was jealous and he felt shitty about it. He wanted me with him but he knew when I was gone I was kicking ass for the other guys. What a fucking surreal and horrific little world. I am sooo glad to be home with Peyton but I miss Ben soooo much.
