If the comments made and withdrawn on the floor of Congress tonight by Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, attributed to you, were accurate, I wanted to express my deep disappointment at your willingness to impugn the integrity of a distinguished and decorated veteran, an honorable public servant. I frankly don't know which behavior is crasser, your goading Congresswoman Schmidt into violating the House rules regarding the prohibition against personally impugning the reputation of a member, or your willingness to lower the tone of a debate the nation deserves to have to the level of name-calling guttersniping.

Congressman Murtha deserves better from you.

The nation does, as well.

In my experience as an elected official, I've most often encountered people who behave like cowards when I've challenged their actions, and asked them to justify their positions. They tend to shout, call me names, and try to refocus attention away from topic. After a while, if I keep refocusing attention back onto the issue at hand, the people begin to understand what is happening. That is what I believe is happening in this country with regard to the policy this administration has pursued in Iraq. What has happened all across this nation is that people have begun to see through the name-calling and obfuscating. They now understand, like Chuck Hagel, and John Murtha, that you can love and honor and respect the warrior, and hate the war.

I believe it was it was Robert E. Lee who said that it was important that war was such a terrible thing, for we should never rush into it.

Next time, please find a more appropriate medium for your hateful message than the floor of Congress, the people's house. Although I suspect you'll have to look far and wide to find a Representative as insensitive and Jean Schmidt to deliver it. But Marines never quit, right?
