The War on Thanksgiving

Frank J Rutherford

November 23, 2005

Having accomplished their goal of absolutely ruining Christmas for the majority of Americans, the elitist liberals have now refocused their scopes on the other holiday that all good people of faith hold as a symbol of what is lasting and decent in this country. I, of course, am speaking of the secular war on Thanksgiving, which threatens to become the new prime battleground in the left's feverish drive towards multiculturalism. Right thinking citizens can not afford to let them get away with those sort of shenanigans again.

Already you see the ACLU bringing their arrogant lawsuits to towns across this Christian country. In Topeka, the city is ordered to remove a haystack from the town square. In Montgomery, the town's pilgrim display was just ruined when officials removed the baby Jesus and the Three Wise Indians from the scene. And in New York City, this year's Thanksgiving Day Parade includes both Blacks and Hispanics, neither of which were present at the original Thanksgiving. Thanks a lot, Macy's, for helping destroy our heritage.

Liberals don't even want the word 'Thanksgiving' to be used in the public arena, preferring instead the generic phrase 'Turkey Day'. Retailers, afraid of losing even a few of the holiday dollars, are quickly falling into line. I myself was subjected to this unpleasantry just last night, while shopping at my local Target. When checking out, the cashier (who, by the way, had a pagan piercing in her tongue, at least twenty earrings, and probably a host of other holes that I couldn't see), paused before ringing up the pilgrim outfit that I had purchased for the upcoming festivities, and asked me (in that smarmy slacker way that I so detest), "is this for you?" Knowing that this was the type of adolescent whose sole purpose in life is to ridicule others, I snapped back "Well, of course it is, little Missy. Do you even know what a pilgrim is?" She just snickered to herself as she bagged my purchases, and then as I was departing, she looked me in the eye and said "Well, Happy Turkey Day". I fumed the entire way home.

<skip>

But all of these delicacies are meaningless without the true underpinnings of the holiday - Thanking the creator for all his many blessings, and for making us Americans instead of some unseemly third-world types. (I often wonder if God calls the day Thankstaking.) Secular atheist liberals don't want to include God in their 'Turkey Day'. They prefer to think of the day as an opportunity to gorge and guzzle while watching football and making plans for the hectic holiday season that lays ahead. Which is true in a way, but I just don't like their attitude.

3. Is it just me or are satire and reality starting to look so much alike
that no one can tell the difference?

I've finally determined that this is satire. I think. No, it is. Probably.

Gah!

4. Actually not too far off the mark,
One of our local radio personalities, who is going to be in Europe for this holiday, says she was asked by someone, "How do they celebrate Thanksgiving in France?" We are so freaking narcissistic.

15. Reminds me of the time I was touring Hong Kong ...
in the mid-1990s, before it reverted to Chinese sovereignty.

I was in line at the de facto Chinese consulate to obtain a visa so I could cross the border into the Mainland. A gabby American woman was in line just ahead of me. The Chinese staffer at the window asked the American woman if she would be able to pick up her visa the next day at such and such a time.

The clueless American obliviously chirped out, "Oh no, we're going to Thanksgiving dinner at one of the hotels!!!" She thought it was so precious, and she raised her eyebrows and paused in expectation that the Chinese staffer would know what she meant and then chirp back, "Oh, neat, that's really, really great!"

Alas, the Chinese staffer didn't give the expected response, but just sort of rolled her eyes and half-smiled to be pleasant.

The American woman had me shaking my head. Why would the clueless American expect the Chinese staffer to know or care what Thanksgiving was? The staffer was a Mainland Chinese, not even a Hong Konger who would, as a result of being from what was then a British colony, have more American influence. Furthermore, China has one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and this exchange was taking place in greater China. But of course this American woman thought everyone knew about Thanksgiving. If she was so intent on clinging to her cherished American holidays, why even travel in a foreign country at all? Leave it to an American to be so narcissistic.

End of rant. It's just that I've done a lot of travel abroad, and I've found that Americans are the ones to carry the most cultural baggage.

16. I did and I have. I realize it's (supposed to be) parody.
I join those who lament the fact that the behavior of these people is so extreme and so psychotic that parody is nearly indistinguishable from fact. Indeed, the continuously increasing degree of reichbot/fundybot extremism makes today's parody identical to tomorrow's fact.

6. Oh, please.....
It's really a war on football!

THink about it.

Actually there should be a 3rd game, one that starts when people are just getting home from dealing with Aunt Tillie and Uncle ED and just want to relax at home and watch a game.

Of course, this year the NFL pundits couldn't have predicted in their wildest dreams that the Dallas/Denver game might be a good one and actually matter.

14. OK. Today I learned
that Thanksgiving is a 'religious' (aka Christian) holiday. Mind you, I have nothing against Christians or Christian holidays. In fact, until Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson stood front and center in our government, I didn't take issue with any manner of Christian expression of the society that we live in.

Today, I learned of a teacher in a public school who was told that her Muslim student won't be recognizing Thanksgiving because it is a "Christian Holiday". Huh??? When did this happen? Is it because of the Mustlim teachings or the Christian teaching? Doesn't make a whit of difference to me...it is an American Holiday!

So, why now is the "Christian" influence coming into the debate? Why is there even a 'debate' about it?

I always knew Thanksgiving as that day the celebrates when the Pilgrims and Indians (Native Americans) came together to feast, celebrating the success of having come to together...learning from each other...helping each other to survive and become stronger! Not about one, but about each other without being so closed that it is necessary for survival to be open to others.

What's so hard about that?

Now, for the first time in my forty-six years Thanksgiving is "religous"!!! Sorry, but this scares me and I reject any notion (satirical or otherwise) that it is a RELIGIOUS celebration!

"We" all need to just celebrate Thanksgiving and let it ibe. If that means donning your sweat pants or dressing in your best polyesters, whatever! But, when the religion creeps in...it's crossing the line by every standard.
