The greek word in the NT is 'euangellion' which is usualy translated by Christians with the word 'gospel' or the words 'good news' as written in Mark 1:1, 'The beginning of the good news ( 'gospel' or 'euangelliou') of Jesus Christ' Or the angels to the shepherds at Jesus' birth in Luke 2:10 'be not afraid - for behold I bring you good news (again 'euangellion') of great joy for all the people,' etc. etc.
So you are exactly right, and in a way it's as bad as declaring our efforts post 9/11 as a 'crusade' on terror.
Just more fundie stuff leaking out through the cracks I'm afraid. It's the administration's secret way of proposing Baptist sermon topics to preachers struggling to get the church service ready in time for Sunday.
