Just how stupid is Karen Hughes, anyway? |

Just another irrelevant post from Yr Devoted Correspondent currently working in Alexandria, Egypt...
According to today's Egyptian Gazette, Bigfoot Hughes is currently galumphing around the area (Middle East), spreading the love.
She was giving a speech and started blathering about the wonderfulness of "our intelligence services," and how we all have to bend over cheerfully and submit to Whatever as Our Noble Intelligence Services smoke out Al Queda around the world, et. al.
Er...Karen, you're having one of those Miscommunication Problems that are SO common to your misadministration. Jebus, do you arrogant fools EVER bother to get this stuff vetted by someone who has actually lived in the area you're visiting?
Apparently nobody told you that you lost your audience as soon as you started gushing about "the intelligence services."
Over here, that term does not conjure up the hero of a bad Tom Clancy novel (is there any other kind of Clancy novel?). Or James Bond or even one of LeCarre's nobel burnt-out ex-spies.
Mention the "intelligence service" in this part of the world, and most people translate it as "secret police"--the nice folks who knock on the door in the middle of the night to Disappear one's relatives to Gitmo etc.

8. Isn't she supposed to be home - raising a teenage son |
|
& spending more time with her family. What kind of family values are these anyhow? What was her middle east experience again? They are better off paying reporters to write 'happy' news.

Remember, this is a mainly govt.-controlled press. And they red-ass Our Own American Royal Family ALL the time!
An editorial cartoon the other day showed Condi Rice with both hands dripping blood. One hand was labeled "Abu Ghraib," the other "Guantanamo."
Another recent editorial, by an Egyptian, seriously suggested that Bush needs professional psychiatric help.
A local business journal (written in Arabic, so I have to depend on translations) runs especially fierce anti-Bush editorials.
I notice a lot of the Western press trying to blow off the "bomb al-Jazeera" story. Yeah, $hrub was just joking, etc.
Over here they took it VERY seriously. I saw only one editorial suggesting it was a joke. All the others not only took it seriously, but treated it as something they would EXPECT Bush to suggest in all seriousness.
One editorial writer even harked back to the Egyptian experience under British colonial rule. He compared the Bush mentality to the British practice of automatically sinking the local trading boats, for having the audacity to compete with the British trade monopoly.
That was a refreshing read!
