Write to Senator Reid and DEMAND the Democrats stand up to this tyranny!
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 12:06 PM by OregonBlue
Dear Senator Reid:

This morning the President admitted that he had authorized warrantless spying on U.S. citizens. I am writing to encourage you to lead the Democrats in standing united against this violation of our civil liberties.

I am so angered by this admission, I cannot urge you strongly enough to stand against this blatantly illegal act by the president. I implore you, do not back down, do not let this Administration get away with this in the name of “protecting our freedom”. This undermines the very nature of freedom. Do not allow the Republicans to sweep this under the rug or to find a “compromise”.

Protecting the civil rights our nation was founded upon is your most sacred duty. If the Democrats do not stand against this tyranny, our nation is lost. I can assure you, if you DO stand up to the GOP and the president, you will have the support of Democrats from all walks of life, as well as the support of many Republicans. If you do not, you all face major repercussions and SERIOUS consequences far beyond the trivialities of losing seats in the next election. The loss of the democratic process itself is a far greater loss than losing an election.

You are there to do the work of the American people, and you must not shirk this distasteful task. Protecting America from tyranny is a job none of us can shirk. We understand that the decisions and actions you must now make are difficult, fearful, and potentially dangerous; but if you stand up for Liberty, for Justice, and for the American people, you have my word that we, the American people, will stand behind you, we millions who cherish Liberty, and who seek Justice in every action of our beloved Republic.

Do not fail us now! -- and we will not fail you. Because we must not fail America.

4. NO, WRITE YOUR SENATORS TOO. Here is the contact page.
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

They do read this stuff and it does matter.
Take the time and complain about domestic spying.
Support the demise of the Patriot Act.
Complain about Iraq, New Orleans and torture.
They need to hear it. Just talking among ourselves is good, but we all need to do more.

Kicked and recommended.

6. Do we really have to threaten him?
I think not. Reid is probably figuring out how to deal with this even as we speak -- or write. Our letters will keep him going in the proper direction -- Judo-style, need be. A threat with a rebuke was appropriate a few months ago, but a majority of the Democratic legislators have been shaken out of their timidity. We should be teaching them the street-fighting we've been doing since 2000. Let us join our fire.

I am convinced that the Democratic leadership is going to be a lot more amenable to our wishes. After all, WE are the leaders, and THEY are our “hired guns”, our factotums, our adminstrative specialists. In that spirit, here's my edit. It makes the threat oblique, and retains and sharpens the fire:
Dear Senator Reid:

This morning the President admitted that he had authorized warrantless spying on U.S. citizens. I am writing to encourage you to lead the Democrats in standing united against this violation of our civil liberties.

I am so angered by this admission, I cannot urge you strongly enough to stand against this blatantly illegal act by the president. I can assure you, if you DO stand up to the GOP and the president, you will have the support of Democrats from all walks of life, as well as the support of many Republicans. If you do not, you all face major repercussions and SERIOUS consequences far beyond the trivialities of losing seats in the next election. Do not fail us now! -- and we will not fail you. Because we must not fail America.
The only major change I made in its content was that the responsibility to defeat tyranny belongs to all of us. And a couple more hortatory remarks invoking America. The rest of it was simply re-arrangement and addition of material to an already strong letter. Please consider it, parts of it, or even the change in the pitch.

I'll be writing my own, similar letter. I urge everyone who reads this to do likewise. Thanks again for a strong voice against a strong threat.

8. Very good. You're probably right but the Dems tend to back down
when their patriotism is questioned and we can be assured that they will be under fire big-time by the neocon cabal. Thanks for your changes. Carrot and stick!

15. Done. Here's what I told him...
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 01:15 PM by Spiffarino
Dear Senator Reid,

As Democratic Leader in the US Senate, I rely on you to be the voice and conscience of the Democratic Party. As I am a lifelong Democrat, I count myself as one of your constituents.

I urge you in the strongest terms possible to do everything in your power to hold George W. Bush accountable for his unconstitutional - even dictatorial - abuse of power. By agreeing to extra-judicial surveillance on U.S. citizens he has gone far beyond his constitutional authority. By openly and remorselessly admitting that he has done so in violation of the U.S. Constitution, his actions are an affront to American law and our very moral values.

While Bush is president our moral authority continues to erode and our standing in the world is at an all-time low. I urge you to fight as hard as possible - and bust a few Democratic heads if necessary - to whip our party into shape for this all-important struggle against this tyranny of the Executive Branch.

With greatest admiration and respect,

Spiffarino
Asheville, NC

19. Write to your Congressman or Congresswoman FIRST
Edited on Sat Dec-17-05 03:03 PM by dubyadubya3
Articles of Impeachment originate in the House of Representatives. That's where the ball gets rolling. I wrote to my Repug Congressman and implored him to draft Articles of Impeachment against Bush-boy. Think he'll follow through?

OTOH, ALL members of the House of Representatives need to be contacted demanding Junior's removal from office. The grounds are really quite simple. He violated his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the COTUS. That is a high crime "worthy" of impeachment. The 4th amendment states, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Clearly, Bunnypants violated this clause (and hence his oath) by authorizing spying on U.S. citizens without obtaining court issued warrants. All Congresspersons took the same oath to defend the COTUS. Shrub attacked the COTUS. So, it is their duty to file impeachment papers. If they refuse, their future opponents have every right to portray the traitors as enemies of the COTUS. Period.

Edited for typo.
