NYT frontpage photo of scared to death US soldier
Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 02:37 PM by protect freedom impe
Today's NEW YORK TIMES front page has an Iraq occupation photo
at suicide bombing in Baghdad with US soldier's face shown
close up. Soldier with a baby's face, has a look that shows the
utter chaos, fear, deathly fear of one so young.

There is a dead body in the background, next to the iron fence,
appears naked as if all that person's clothes were blown away
by the bomb blast.

I sure pity the mother who sees her little boy so scared.
That mother & father will be so so worried their son
has been wounded, wounded in his soul, never to be the same again.

its hard to see the photos details of that young soldier's face.
its hard to see his eyes.

No words can describe his eyes.

4. I appreciate your sincerity...
but he's probably just thinking fast, covering his position, got his guard WAY up, and his weapon ready, with the safety off.

Also, no one makes it through basic training (boot camp) and remains a "baby" or "a little boy," although, yes, his mother will be upset to see this photo.

Thanks for posting it.

In with the very old". That's what I said when the Chimp in Charge put his 'dream team' together.

I agree with you 110%.

9. It's so hard to judge from a still photo
The picture has captured a millisecond in time, but I don't doubt that it conveys something essential about the personnel in Iraq.

Naturally, if the photo wins a Pulitzer and the Chimpministration objects, the Times will hand the prize back to maintain "access."

Trouble is it makes them trigger-happy.

24. Are you saying that there are NO pants-pissers over there?
Because I didn't even come close to saying that ALL of them were that way.
The look on the soldiers face in the pic doesn't exactly scream Bravery", now does it?

lighten up a little...or a lot maybe.

Why would I want to go over there?
That's a job for the people who VOLUNTEERED to be king george's pawns...even the pants-pissers among them.

22. shouldn't someone like the Pope call him on that?
If anyone has a conscience, should they not be calling George on his professed Christianity when he lies to murder thousands of people? Where is the outrage amongst the religious? What the hell are they waiting for--the handouts from the faith based charities? I am not so sure who the leaders are of the other mainstream religions, but shouldn't someone who professses to be religious and is sincere and believing about their religion, call him on that, especially when we see all sort of photos depicting George with "halos" around his head? Where is the outrage from these other religious persons? From the Pope?

17. Baby Face Nelson?
John Wesley Harding had a baby face apparantly and shot people who called him a boy!!!

Robert Fisk: One, two, three, what are they fighting for?

Oct 24, 2003: (The Independent) I was in the police station in the town of Fallujah when I realised the extent of the schizophrenia. Captain Christopher Cirino of the 82nd Airborne was trying to explain to me the nature of the attacks so regularly carried out against American forces in the Sunni Muslim Iraqi town. His men were billeted in a former presidential rest home down the road - "Dreamland", the Americans call it - but this was not the extent of his soldiers' disorientation. "The men we are being attacked by," he said, "are Syrian-trained terrorists and local freedom fighters." Come again? "Freedom fighters." But that's what Captain Cirino called them - and rightly so.
<snip>
Little wonder, then, that Stars and Stripes, the American military's own newspaper, reported this month that one third of the soldiers in Iraq suffered from low morale. And is it any wonder, that being the case, that US forces in Iraq are shooting down the innocent, kicking and brutalising prisoners, trashing homes and - eyewitness testimony is coming from hundreds of Iraqis - stealing money from houses they are raiding? No, this is not Vietnam - where the Americans sometimes lost 3,000 men in a month - nor is the US army in Iraq turning into a rabble. Not yet. And they remain light years away from the butchery of Saddam's henchmen. But human-rights monitors, civilian occupation officials and journalists - not to mention Iraqis themselves - are increasingly appalled at the behaviour of the American military occupiers.
<snip>
...
And how bad is the problem of THEFT
...
"In one Iraqi city, for example, the "Coalition Provisional Authority" - which is what the occupation authorities call themselves - have instructed local money changers not to give dollars for Iraqi dinars to occupation soldiers: too many Iraqi dinars had been stolen by troops during house raids. Repeatedly, in Baghdad, Hillah, Tikrit, Mosul and Fallujah Iraqis have told me that they were robbed by American troops during raids and at checkpoints. Unless there is a monumental conspiracy on a nationwide scale by Iraqis, some of these reports must bear the stamp of truth."

HERE AT HOME, than over there in that hell hole. THIS mother's heart aches for him, and for the mom who's going to see that photo and sob.
