"the Confederate Flag is the Democratic Party's contribution to the south"
Is Howard Dean in it to win or is he in it to rake in the million dollar contributions he's received?

What was he smoking to make such an arsenine statement?

Maybe it's time I throw in the towel, as a Dean supporter, that statement alone is enough for me to give up on politics in America.

1. Southern voters are all-important. They must be coddled without reserve.

5. PLEASE remember that the majority of southerners DO NOT THINK LIKE THIS!
On any given day, I can ride through this state, and I will see maybe 5 pick-ups with Confed flags.

Dean's remark was condescending to the lowest element of the South, an element that is HARDLY the majority of Southern voters.

8. Duly noted.
But the majority of Southerners vote Republican and are quite staunch in their support of the Republicans.

19. I KNOW this does represent the mentality of most all Southerners...
Hey Jchild,

I may be a Yankee from the Deep North ;-) but the year or so I spent living and working down South turned me into a serious 'Dixiephile.' There may still be a fair amount of racism/anti-semitism in the South, but certainly no more than in Northern major cities. (And in the case of Philadelphia or Detroit, probably a good deal less...) It seemed that most all of the Southerners I got to know had none of the negative yet all of the positive aspects of the 'traditional' Southern character: impeccable manners, generosity, humility, and sincerity.

Cheers,

Robert

3. J. Jackson Jr. said that.

See the Dean blog. 2nd article down.

Then see my post on the Dixiecrats which started in 1948. If you can't find it tell me, and I will do a search.

Yes, the Dixie Democrats which broke off under Thurmond ? have to answer for a lot of the hatred. Many of them were KKK, and they have to take responsibility.

On Edit, meant to reply to the first poster, Zidzi. Did you see my post about the Dixiecrats before? I think that is what Jackson meant. He is right.

It's still stupid that Dean allows such a ridiculous statement on his website though.....

10. Weren't the Democrats the party of the south...
back in those days?

I may be wrong. It might, however, be historically accurate.

13. Speak to them huh
Why doesn't he just ask them to take that racist flag off of their vehicle? What's with this pandering to the Haley Barbour vote? Crush 'em, don't join 'em.

16. pretty slick save
I'm willing to concede that the statement doesn't mean he supports dixicrats. But he sure stuck his foot in it.

Not very smart wasting time before a Democratic primary sucking up to racist republicans, but its his campaign.

12. Actually, This is Indeed Accurate...
An important fact too often lost in this whole business is that the "Stars and Bars" was added to the flags of several Southern states in the mid-'50s/early '60s as a gesture of defiance towards new Federal civil rights laws and reforms; it is not simply a vestige of Reconstruction. And (dubiously) Dean is right: this was one of the last acts of the Dixiecrats before the "Solid South" went solidly Republican...
