What is the big deal about Dean's comments??
Although poorly worded, I think we all know what he meant.

He simply was stating that poor Southern whites should vote Democrat because we would help them more than the Republicans.

-------

But....

The comments have dropped Dean below Edwards on my preference list because it shows how out of touch Dean is with the South.

NOBODY with a confederate flag in their truck window will vote for a Democrat who passed a civil union bill and is from the Northeast

I have friends (yes I interact with Republicans) who have "redneck" tendencies and I can guarantee that this comment will only hurt Dean's chances with Southern white male voters. They will think it is funny.

Plus, I would guess that he has, although unintentionally, hurt his relationship with alot minority voters across America who, correctly, view the confederate flag with hatred and disgust.

1. Totally agree
I know what he meant but his ignorance of what the Confederate flag symbolizes shows that he's not ready for prime time.

Like I said on other posts Dean will get killed on Gay marriage in the South. Is he going for the gay Klansman vote?

2. Yep

I concluded some time ago that he doesn't really understand this moment in American history for what it is. He would have done very well in 1976 or 1980. But this Culture War thing...Dean screws up almost every time he gets within reach of it. He's no racist, but he refuses to understand that the present economic problem derives from exploitation of a fundamental disagreement about race and white claim to domination. Not the other way around, not independent of each other.
