"OK, Americans, get out the champagne and confetti and start dusting off that old recording of "Happy Days Are Here Again", because Halliburton made windfall profits off of Bush's oil war in Iraq on the blood of thousands, corporations made more money from polluting our air and water thanks to Bush's environmental rollbacks, Americans went into more credit card debt because they don't have cash, and the top one percent who were handed our surplus as a gift to buy one more SUV, luxury car, or vacation they didn't need, drove the GDP up to 7.2% for the end of the 3rd quarter. I know you felt the vibrations coming. I know it was more cathartic than the solar flare shower that hit us. I know it was orgasmic. I know you just see that money magically appearing in your wallets...What was that? Nothing has changed for you? Well, according to the media hype about the current BUSH BOOM (which really more adequately describes their Shock and Awe tactics,) because of this one number we all have jobs now, we all can pay our bills, no child will now go hungry in this country, everyone has affordable healthcare, no senior has to choose between food and medicine, our environment is clean, crime is non existent, and all is, "Peachy keen" in our world. Hell, so who cares if our troops in Iraq are being ambushed thirty times a day, are tired, traumatized, and now being told they will have to buy their own equipment? Who cares if close to three million jobs were lost with no formidable increase in sight? Who cares that the corporate whores of this administration still line up outside the Capitol building to get special favors over your voice, while Congress votes itself a raise as they try to take your overtime pay away? Who cares that their policies will leave our environment more debilitated? Who cares if corporate benefactors of Bush are working to rig touchscreen voting machines so they never have to worry about you having a say in this govt., that you will still support? Who cares that the reality of this is just more smoke and mirrors perpetrated by a desperate administration seeing its lies unraveling before our very eyes and needing to do some major damage control? Well, you better care, because the deficit is still climbing and it is your child who will have to pay for it while they party.
The bottom-line to all of this is, is that this is a disgrace. There are many states scraping the bottom of the barrel to make their budgets with many essential services being cut. There are still many unemployed Americans in this country who are not claiming benefits because their benefits have run out, as have the jobs. There are still over 41 million Americans without healthcare at all, and millions more who cannot afford what they have because of rising costs. There are still school districts cutting their budgets up to 80% because of the state budget shortfalls by having to cut teachers instead of hiring them, and also cutting school programs. This oil war in Iraq combined with quick fix rebates that are not tax cuts has brought spending up, giving the illusion of a trend. It has not brought any states out of deficit, it has not paid off our national debt which continues to grow, and it has not produced the number of jobs necessary to really be able to say the economy is looking up. It is also not long-term and it is not an indicator of our true growth as a nation. Since when are numbers the only indication of that anyway? Is that really what we have been reduced to? I have absolutely no doubt that the Bush administration will use the media to their advantage to hawk these numbers ad nauseum however, because they know their war is not making them look good and the election is only a year away. Yet, our troops continue to suffer in Iraq, many without adequate equipment or healthcare for all this sudden pseudo prosperity. They still fight in Afghanistan as well where Bush has failed, and our people in this country for the most part except for the 1% who got most of the tax cut to buy yet another car they don't need are really not the ones reaping any benefits. While this criminal administration works behind the scenes to strip Medicare, overtime pay, bust unions, leave our children behind, and steal our tax dollars to give their corporate contributors more tax breaks, this one number is just supposed to automatically make us forget their lies. Their lies about WMD, the WH Leaker, Bush's failure to capture Bin Laden, Hussein, the anthrax killer, their violations of international law and our constitution, and the class warfare they have waged in every one of their policies ever since the USSC and the corporations of America installed Bush and he told us he doesn't care what we think.
It is also a crying shame that the media is also such a willing accomplice to this criminal activity, for it is not the true picture. As long as there are still children who go to sleep hungry in this country, we have not grown as a nation. As long as intolerance, greed, indifference, hate, and partisanship rule our political policy, we have not grown as a nation. As long as our environment continues to be the battleground between those who know its potential and how to use it with respect and vision, as opposed to those who only use it to plunder for selfish purposes, we have not grown as a nation. As long as we allow the policy of closed fist to prevail over the policy of open arms at the expense of the freedoms we so dearly cherish, we have not grown as a nation. As long as we continue to allow these opportunists to ravage our country and assail our Democracy, we have not grown as a nation. That cannot be gauged by any number, unless you look at casualty and jobless rates. The American people must finally begin to see that living our lives based on polls and other numbers that can be manipulated by the foxes who are guarding the hen house while ignoring the reality of what Americans are really going through is not providing us with a Democracy we were promised, have worked hard for, and deserve. Conviction, compassion, passion, but more importantly truth are the true measurements of growth. On that score, this administration fails miserably."
