How many funerals have received coverage?
Perhaps I've missed them.
I am not talking exploitation here. That's another thread.
I am talking covering reality. Actual events that inevitably come as the logical outcome of war.
No scenese of weeping parents, spouses and children, no high school buddies choking back tears as they talk about what a great friend the deceased was. You know, the things that happen after someone dies prematurely from war wounds.
The ongoing stream of funerals was one thing that turned people against Vietnam.
As one farmer I worked for at the time said to me, "If it was doing anyone any good, I might say we should stay there. But we're just getting our boys killed. Bring them home." (Not that the present situation is identical.)
but i want to know who decided funerals and grieving are not news in time of war. Bush? The Network executives?
Bush is getting a pass. His war seems nice and clean. You can hardly see the blood.
Covering the losses of war and the aftermath can be done without exploiting. Where the hell is the coverage?

1. I doubt if many people would want the news
media around something as private as a funeral no matter what their politics are.

5. I could be wrong
but I think that the DoD instructed all news media in the US that they wouldn't be allowed to cover funerals. I've got a vague memory of reading this a couple of months ago, but can't say with any certainty.

It must be strange being in such a vacuum. Over here in the UK, we had a televised service this morning commemerating all the journalists who died during the war. It was a sorry reminder that over six months on, so little is known about many of these deaths and how there has been minimal accountability from the DoD.

6. Bush shut down coverage and to the best of my knowledge....
has not attended a single funeral.
He has banned cameras from the bases where the bodies come in when they are shipped home.

Someone asked the other day how many funerals for soldiers did Clinton attend?
The question is, how many DIED under Clinton?? Damn few.

7. Nationally, not many.
Locally, they get air time. Several of the ones from here in IL have been lead stories on our local TV stations.

10. AP transmits photos whenever they can
Photos from many funeral services are sent nationwide via the AP to its members. Newspapers have the ability to acknowledge the funerals, but nearly all of them do not. If your paper does not, contact them and ask them, politely but firmly, why they are dishonoring the memory of our troops who have fought and died for America.

You don't even have to say whether you support the war. The issue is respect for fallen soldiers.
