Here's the entry from Dean's blog:
Drive for Democracy: Looking for a Million Michelles
I couldn't get a good connection from the Motel 6 last night -- sorry.
There’s a legend – that I happen to believe – that Trippi once drove a car into a ditch in Iowa so he could tell the farmer who pulled him out to go to caucus.
Well, we ended up fairly near an Arizona ditch last night when the Airstream started pouring green fluid out of the front and came to a dead halt in the middle of a stretch of some of the most beautiful desert in the world, with huge, wind-sketched mountains holding the sky together at every horizon.
Taking my best Trippi lessons, I didn’t miss the chance to find some new Dean activists.
Two women and two children stopped to pick me up in a car as almost beaten up as the Airstream while Dave and Ryan stayed with the RV and waited for a second ride. I got in the car the driver said “Who is Howard Dean?"
"We’re Michelle. I’m Michelle and this is my friend Michelle, and my kids.” Michelle 1 had driven Michelle 2 to Las Vegas for the weekend to visit Michelle 2’s boyfriend and go trick or treating with the kids. Michelle 1 said, “is he a Democrat? We have to get rid of Bush.” Her son Don, who is 8, said, “My grandmother Billie thinks Bush is dumb,” and giggled, “do you want a handiwipe?” (Throughout the ride Don kept handing me handiwipes, and then taking them back and giving them to his little brother Zachary. Don also told me about how he was born on September 11, so every year on his birthday he sees pictures of bombs, but this year he built some new towers out of cardboard boxes and his grandmother spray painted it.)
Michelle 2 became interested when I told them Dean was a doctor, and that we were meeting with grassroots organizers around the country. Michelle 1 asked about the war, “well I’m against it,” she said, “its costing so much and they still haven’t found that stuff they said they went in for” By the time I dropped them off they all wanted T-shirts (I only had buttons) and were ready to bring me home for dinner – and to join the campaign on the web site.
There are a million Michelles in America, people who want to get involved, want to do something, who feel strongly enough about health care for their children, the war, about jobs and leadership that they will join the campaign. There was the waitress in Kingman, the man who sat behind us at a when we were trying
Then Charlie responded in the comment section:
The Airstream is my bus (Crystle For Senate). I still haven't even seen it--they were to drop it off in PA for our grassroots campaign, but it needs some help before it can be a reliable campaign vehicle for anyone.
We're flying a friend of mine who's a mechanic out to Arizona to fix the bus and get it back on the road. He'll drive it toward Iowa (repair kit in tow, just in case) and then on to PA. If the Dean team wants to give it a shot again, we'll work something out. I'm just happy Zeph and Ryan are safe, and that they met some great people along the way.
If anyone wants to help pay for repairs, please go here:
