Bush considering starting up the draft. (Mike Webb Show)
Edited on Tue Nov-04-03 03:18 AM by Cascadian
Mike Webb has just been talking about it on his show right now. He also mentions that Bush has been quietly considering to bring back draft boards. the draft was mentioned on an obscure government website devoted to the war on terrorism.

http://www.mikewebb.org

I knew it. Bush and his cohorts said they didn't need a draft earlier in this war campaign. I guess they lied again! If anybody can find that particular website, let us know.

1. I will be blunt with you
the Draft can be enacted in a matter of oh, 72 hours max. Bush just
has to sign the executive order and the legislation is ready to go

Man. I am truly thinking about my cousin tonight. He is 18 years old and could be conscripted because of this crap!

I will never support this. I would encourage him to run!

I have three nephews that are draft bait. I don't
think he has the balls to call a draft. That will
bring rioting in the streets. Its one thing to
have a volunteer army where your chances of knowing
a soldier are small but its another to have every
kid you know be draft bait.

PS. Having families and going to school won't be

11. Rioting? You can BANK on that.
Because I'd be one of the first to get on the streets and yelling!

They do this, they are FINISHED. I don't care if they try full-scale Big Brother lockdown - they will RUE the day they call for a draft. Mark my words on this one.

First they piss off the military. Then the CIA. Finally, the rest of the populace too blind to wake up. When their kids - or they themselves - might DIE IN IRAQ, people will wake up very, very fast.

Vietnam taught us a lot. We know more know. They call a draft, expect cities to be in flames.

15. No, there were few young men standing up to object Oct.25, 2003
at the DC-anti-war protests...some older Vietnam-era people were carry protest signs about the DRAFT, but no draft age men....

there has been little objection from the actual draftees, in any of the anti-war protests (total lack of participation), or in voting (total lack of participation)...

the bushies watch the anti-war protests carefully...and no doubt, they noticed the lack of resistance from the actual draftees....

43. Forgive me
if this sounds ignorant but I think the majority of the original anti-war protesters did it to try to prevent the war when they felt they might have a voice. Now that Bush has proved that the American citizens do not have a voice, less young people are going to be involved with protests. More likely they are still making their voices heard in different ways such as MoveOn, etc.

48. not ignorant
I have observed the same thing in my little small town. Weekly protests pre-invasion were there in the freezing cold -- and they were getting larger and the signs were getting smarter--and costumes and percussion--after the invasion--no one protested anymore There was a protest in conjunction with the Oct 25 DC and SF protests again, but no more weekly ones--and it is getting cold again--if Bush does the draft, I suspect we will see it again--most of the organizing is done by a group called CONA, and I confess I do not know what that acronym stands for. The Quakers are also involved in the organizing.

If Bush waits until his re-election and is IN FACT, reelected, I will consider a move before dufus can even consider the draft. Canada may have a recession but it treats it's citizens a lot better than we do.

instituted. I read a poster on another thread say that they would have to do it by Mar 04. Not spewing it as a fact, just stating someone's opinion. THIS MUST BE AN ISSUE!

Having said that, I don't think the draft is for Iraq. I think it is for never ending war all over the planet.

Thanks to the former prime ministers Pearson and Trudeau, they let them stay. It is hard to say if the next prime will be that generous. I get the funny feeling that Paul Martin may not be too sympathetic but who knows what will happen in the coming year.

Haven't you been feeling severely depressed, even suicidal? Been self-mutlating (no time like the present to start)? How about a little Prozac for that?

Is your neighbor’s 95 year old great-grandfather starting to look sexually attractive to you? Time to act on that impulse.

That way, it will ensure the sons of puke POS repugs also go, and that its not just the poor and minorities who end up conscripted.

Message to Freepers of draft age: When you go for induction, be sure to ask for 11B if you're going into the Army or 0311 if you're headed to the Marines. Don't be like Tom Delay and let someone get in front of you for these coveted military occupation fields.

13. The "sons of puke POS repugs" will get out of the draft
They will get deferments for college, which their parents can afford, while the children of the working class will get drafted because they can't get a deferment.

I wouldn't collaborate with the war machine, and that includes the draft boards. Your suggestion is akin to having death penalty opponents work in the execution chamber.

From the bits and pieces I've been hearing I'd bet my bank account on it. That's why it's so critical that the Dem's put forth their strongest candidate in 2004. Unfortunately, the masses won't stop and think about this until it is too late. :[

most parents today hardly know that there are TWO wars going on...and perpetual war is the focus....most parents today couldn't find Afganistan and Iraq on a world map....

22. Right-O
It's the safe and comfortable who can "afford" to be for the war.

I'd be for the draft if there were no defferments for college or family responsibilities, and if you have a medical condition that precludes combat, you serve as a medic or radio operator.

The only reason this war had/has the support it does is because 95% of America is untouched by it. They sit in their La-z-boys, waving their flags, cheering on their team like it's Monday Night football. Let American's fully share the real brurdens of war and we'll have a big fat reality check.
