You will not believe what I just saw. |

Walking out to the Rite Aid on St. Charles here in Nawlins (hey, I needed some Lucky Charms), I passed a red pickup. Guess what it had on it? A Confederate flag on the back window...and a Dean for America bumper sticker on the bumper. Amazing. My buddy had to tell me to close my mouth, seriously!
Later.

5. Hey...the candidate doesn't choose his supporters... |
|
You could just as well see a swastika and a Gephart sticker.
The man used the phrase "confederate flag" in a sentence - nobody seems interested in what he really had to say.
Sad,

16. Sure. Like you'd see Kerry stickers at a Klan rally |
|
Maybe Dean is getting a bad rap but that analogy's a mite silly.

8. Embrace racism!! God, our country really sucks right now. |
|
I guess I would have to blame it on Americans being completely brain-dead from non-stop TeeVee and a steady diet of violent sports and mindless sit-com crap for men and women. No one remembers how to think anymore. There is no compassion except the 5 minute showboat variety.

C-Span had a long session of open phones with the topic Dean"s comment. Overwhelmingly the calls flew in from both blacks and whites in the southern states e.ven Mississippi. There was enormous defense of Dean and they were all expressing in one way or another the need for the party to reach out to southern whites. I am more surprized at how the party has gone appoplectic. It is almost as if they see this as the opportunity to "Stop Dean"

12. Dean must be stopped so Kerry or Gefart can have theirs! |
|
Don't you see? Dean is a spoiler! He gets all those personal donations from those icky individual citizens rather than scoop his government measured grule from the trough! He's short, and quick tempered, and doesn't wear sleek black clothing like Clark!
And now he wants to get support from those horrible southern working people!
Just who in the hell is he to ruin the party for the entitled?

13. I saw a beat-up old redneck pickup truck... |
|
... with a Dean for America sticket the other day. No confederate flag, though (considering this is CT, what can you do?)
Interestingly, I saw it on the way to a Clark fundraiser!

My friend is from North Carolina. She considers herself a democrat and thinks Bush must be stopped at all costs. I'm a total lefty. Our views completely align except when it comes to guns. She has a confederate flag throw blanket. She likes the rebel flag. She currently has a black roommate, so she took it down. Her view is that the confederate flag is part of her heritage, but for her it does not mean she is a racist. This took me a long time to understand, as I'm a northerner with a deep skepticism of the south.

15. I know many people like your roomate. |
|
They have a keen interest in southern history and in the roles their relatives played in that history. To them it is a way of remembering the sacrifices that their relatives made, and making sure that no one disrespects their sacrifices. They usually won't fly the flag, since the meaning has been warped, and they don't want to offend anyone. These folks are totally different from the occasional redneck in a pickup truck flying the flag.

17. Actually, they often aren't that different in their views |
|
Many of those who fly it do it just to flip the bird at political correctness, not to offend anyone. In fact, many of these people are also offended because a symbol of their heritage and history has been stolen from them. Yes, people need to be respectful and sensitive to the feelings of blacks on this issue, but in doing so, people shouldn't be disrespectful and insensitive to the feelings of those whose family members died in the Civil War. People often forget it was NOT the wealthy slave owners who were typically fighting for the Confederacy. It was just the poor suckers who got pulled into it because the north was coming south and they were protecting their families and homes. There's no shame in them doing that. I would do the same if the situation were reversed. There's a lot more room for fairness on this issue than is frequently demonstrated.

I've never understood the need to totally grind the loser into the ground, especially when the losses were so horrendous on both sides.
