Why aren't American flags all over the country flying at half-mast?
Our soldiers are dying every day, and this isn't considered cause for mourning by our Federal, State, and local governments? Maybe we need to get some resolutions passed (I live in the People's Republic of Ann Arbor, might be able to get that done here) to fly all flags at half-mast until American soldiers are no longer dying. Maybe this will demonstrate to the public on a daily basis what is happening in Iraq, bring home the past, present, and future cost of the unelected liars' war.

25. Good point! Sometimes I wish I lived in the USA
So I could have a US flag on my lawn and fly it UP UP UP when St. Ronnie's overstayed welcome in this dimension finally expires!

2. It Just Illustrates The Value That Republicans Place on Dead Soldiers
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 12:42 AM by mhr
NONE!

From a Republican perspective a dead soldier can no longer contribute and is now without merit. It just proves that Republicans care far more for money than they do people.

Hypocrites, one and all.

4. Saw a great quote to this effect,
the father of a soldier serving in Iraq, himself a veteran, said that this administration cares about its soldiers like Tyson's cares about its' chickens.

but this is an opening to us, we can now retake the National

3. because...
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 12:33 AM by LastKnight
that would mean the government would have to admit it was wrong- and take blame for it. and for that to happen under this administration... would take nothing short of the second coming of crist.

but finially a troop protest they cant scream 'unamerican' at... i like it, if you start writing letters so will i, just gotta know who to address them to.

8. I'm thinking seriously about getting a flagpole for my front lawn
I'll hang the flag at half mast and when my neighbors ask me why, I'll tell them, "out of respect for the latest fatalities in Iraq". I'm a disabled veteran, visibly so, and I know that there are some pretty conservative people in my neighborhood. I have a "Regime Change 2004" bumper sticker just below my Purple Heart license plate, just to rattle their cages. What can they say to me?

I'm in the process of drafting a letter to the local paper about having all American flags on public buildings in Ann Arbor flown at half-mast until our troops are home and safe. We'll see if the idea gets any traction here. Any other Ann Arbor residents on DU want to join in?

18. Of course you can,
let's kick it around the country. I'm tired of letting the not-right wing coopt our national symbols, let's use this one for a good cause and take it back.

7. They should at least have flown the flag half mast last Sunday
and Monday.

I kind of wonder about that, too.

9. "Why aren't you flying your flag at half mast?
Aren't you aware that there has been X amount of soldiers killed?"
would be an eye-opening way for us to inform the communities, make them aware and honor the dead. Anybody flying a flag should be asked these questions. If they're going to fly the flag, they need to damn well know the stats. It would also go a long way(at least in my mind) towards giving the flag some of its lost dignity.

20. Agreed
And not to sound cold here, but this is a brilliant political way to makes those undecided but patriotic voters start to view Liberals as patriotic and caring about our soldiers because Repubs have spent a lot of time, money, and energy making us look like because we don't support non-stop war that we hate our troops and our country.

11. Molly Ivins says she knows when we should get out of Iraq....
Conservative estimates so far place the number of Iraqi dead at 3500+...Molly says we should get out before we end up killing more Iraqis than Saddam did.
GO MOLLY!

26. Hell,my dad wrote the same thing in an editorial in our paper....
About two months ago my dad submitted an editorial to our mostly right-wing (although moderating in the last six months) newspaper. He asked the same question. SH kills a load of Iraqi's so to avenge him and rid the country of his brutal tactics we go in and kill thousands more than he killed.

If Ivan said 3500 Iraqi's dead that is a very conservative number...

14. Why not flags at half mast?
same reason the catholic church doesn't perform Mass for miscarriages...hypocrisy...
I love the line from the Simpson's Minister Rev. Lovejoy..."ever read this thing , technically you can't even go to the bathroom"

Food for thought on why most ideological positions don't make any sense if you take them to their logical conclusion...

15. American Flags
I have to agree, american flags should be at half-mass. I wish people the best of what he or she can make of it in Iraq. HOwever, we are in a state of war, and flags should be lowered in rememberance.

Even if its one day a week (Sunday, day of saboth), would be better than current.

21. Call into your local talk shows
This is probably a great way to spread the idea around. Someone should try to get into C-SPAN during Washington Journal this morning too. It would be a great idea all around.

22. perhaps even better would be to fly it as close to the ground
as possible on days with multiple deaths. I think it would create a certain amount of tension in people who saw it, moreso than only at half-staff.
