1. Oh, God yes!
The fact that this was dragged out shows the incredible lack of spine, and the amazing amount of political opportunism from the so-called Dem leadership.

We are so screwed in 2004 if some heads don't roll.

2. I am way over it.
This was a spectacular display of willful miscomprehension.

4. HELL YES!!! Focus on the 'real' enemy of people of color...
he's in the white house now. (Credit Carol M Braun) who said it with far more eloquence.

5. keep on truckin !
A fella in my office, who is leaning towards Dean (this guy normally votes Repug) is convinced that that one quote (out of context) is the death knell for Dean. I told him that it is totally recoverable and to not lose hope.

12. I didn't vote in this poll
because like this woman says, we need to discuss it - if we move on, will race and reaching out be discussed?

7. yes!
Every possible thought on this matter has been expressed about ten zillion times.

Dean did the right thing by apologizing. I wouldn't mind seeing Sharpton appear with Dean and declare the thing over.

10. Outside the "north-south" divide-- i.e., far west of the Mississippi
most people I encounter just "don't get this fixation on refighting the civil war or on the symbols that reflect that war." As one who was largely raised in the south, I've always been amused at the reactions of new arrivals to the deep south upon facing this continuing fixation, but also personally have a better understanding for why that is the case.

While racisim continues everywhere, I love that historically, many left the remnants of conlict well behind in settling the West. Obviously, and sadly, Native American racism remains a problem and there are pockets of white supremacy that plague some of the most desirable settings. But generally, westerners are divorced from lingering civil war driven controversies. Just an observation.... Every region of the country has their own issues unique to them and to their regional history.

11. We should move on from the comment but not
from the sentiment behind it. If we are going to defeat Bush in 2004, we need to win at least some southern states. Its an important issue. The Democratic Party should try to find a way to win over poor white southerners, but should let Dean's comment go.

13. Yes to the Dean comment.
No to the issue of poor racist whites who are so stupid to vote republican

and no to the issue of the confederate flag not being disgustingly racist.
