Why I hope Hannity and the Repukes keep making a stink about "The Memo" |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 03:31 PM by a_random_joel
1. It keeps the focus on the intelligence issues including the pre-war intelligence failures and exaggeration, and the CIA agent leak. 2. By complaining about the "politicization" of intelligence, they are setting themselves and the Administration up to be judged by this very standard. Hoist by their own pitard.
Keep talking about it guys, you're argument may be effective to "the choir"... But to the opposition, including undecided and swing voters, this may do some serious damage to their credibility.
Personally, I think the memo may have been intentionally leaked for this very reason. I haven't read enough of the details, so I may be jumping the gun here.

1. Nothing in memo that is bad for Dems |
|
Read the memo. Nothing in this internal talking points memo that is bad for Democrats. We need to know who grabbed it though, because could be used by WH to deny access to more information (someone else posted that astute observation). Also need to know if this memo was a stolen document. Federal crime. Can you say 'receiving stolen property?'. Once the stolen property issue cmes to light certain talking heads will lose ALL access to repubs.

2. If the WH did nothing wrong, then there's nothing to "politicize". |
|
It is not "politicizing" something to go after legitimate wrongs. The memo does not speak of manufacturing wrongs to tar the administration with. It says: "we have an important role to play in revealing the misleading, if not flagrantly dishonest, methods and motives of senior administration officials who made the case for unilateral pre-emptive war."
The Republicans on the committee may differ in that characterization, but that is why there is a bipartisan committee. This is not "politicizing" any more than any properly functioning part of our political system is.
It is as much, if not moreso, a case of "politicizing" for Republicans on the committee to ignore the White House's role in these matters. The White House, after all, was the driving force for starting this war, and the clearing house and final judge for all intelligence gathered pertaining to Iraq.

3. I had a similar reaction. |

I think they're just trying to shore up their base. Give them some false confidence. While the headlines about the memo scared me, when I read it I realized there was at least as much damaging stuff to the Republicans as the Democrats. It was supposedly a candid moment this Dem was caught in, and he's still talking about Bush's ulterior motives. That, psychologically, doesn't play well for the Republicans. The more I think about it, they're actually kind of stupid. I think this was just a short-term, pre-emptive, tactical counter to the Dems actually doing what they said they were going to do in the memo. It won't do any long-term damage. If need be we can start saying, "This reminds me- what's happening with the Plame affair?" I also saw a Lou Dobbs poll saying 97% of people in an unofficial CNN poll thought it was "Politics as usual."
Ultimately, who cares?
